him eagerly for a sculler likely to lower Kemp's crest. He heard enough of young Searle to induce him to go up and interview the lad and in a little while he had brought Seatle to Sydney and rent him afloat for the first time on the waters of the Parramatta., Matterson went the right way to work, matching his man with a third-rate first in the person of Julius Wolf, Searle met this aspirant to aquatic fame on June 15, 1888, for £200, and a soft race resulted in a very ensy win for Matterson's boy. On July 13th Stansbury and Searle rowd for £300, and again Searle wan cleverly, though Stans- bury showed such grand form and stuck to his man so nobly all the way through that he made Searle put up a record for the course, viz., 19m. $325. On September 14th Chris Neilson, who was thought to be the next best to Kemp went down very badly before the wonderful powers of the "Clarence Comet," and then his match with Hughes on the Hunter river in October resulted similarly, in spite of the fact that Searle's boat was filled with water soon after the start. Thus from June 15th to October 6th, a period of less than four months, Searle won £400 in stakes alone, while that sum was a good deal more than quadrupled by his backers, who found money to bet on him as long as there was a penny coming from the other side. Then came the climax of a series of brilliant victories, when on October 17th, he met the champion, Peter Kemp, for a stake of £1000. | The betting on this event was the heaviest ever known, in Australia at any rate, on a boat race, and Seafle's party won some £7000 oyer and above the stakes. Then the lad took a rest,
abo while visiting his parents at Graiton he made the old couple a present of £1000 out of his winnings, He won first prize, 500, in the tournament got up in Brisbane, defeating. W. Beach, P. Kemp,. N. Matterson and other, and then he has rested, not that his grand frame needed it, but simply that there was no one to row against him, "His parents are English, and he first saw the light by the side of the Clarence river in July, 1866, so that he is not yet 23 years of age. He stands 5 feet 10 inches high, and rowed last year in his various races at 160 pounds. In the colder climate of England, and with added bone, he is expected to scale 168 pounds, fit and well, when he meets O'Connor in September. At present be weighs 165 pounds. He is possessed of a splendid physique, and his breadth of shoulder would attract attention in a crowd, even were he un- known. There is a strange feature about him. His hands and forearms are as hairy of a monkey's, and yet when he peels off his shirt to row, his chest and back are as white and bairless as a woman's. He is very fair, his hair being straw-colored and his light mustache almost white.
LONDON GOSSIP."..
Under date June 1st Mr. J. Gordon Bennett cables the following to the New York Herald - The political world will turn its back on London for the next ten days. To-night will see the last of the grand dinners and receptions until Whitsuntide has passed. A good deal is crowded
· into this last night. There are no end of dinners, Lady Kilbourne's party, Mrs. Bischoffschelm's little dance, and any number of "small and earlies,” so-called because they are neither small nor carly.
Dancing is now put off to so late an hour that by the time the band strikes up the young men who know how to dance have gone home. One of the difficulties of the hostesi of our day is to find dancing young men. Is it that the new generation think themselves superior to this form of exercise, or that they prefer the club and the cigarette? Are they too lazy to dance, or don't they know how?
Whatever the explanation may be, certain it is that at most balls nowadays young ladies find it no easy matter to obtain a jadicions selection of partners.
Cynical observers would perhaps say that the married women are cutting out the unmarried girls. There in a good deal in that. It is a theme which would furnish much room for com- ment, especially if it could be treated with ́entire frankness and without fear of breaking windows in ever. Bo, many houses. I confess, however, that I for one should be afraid to enter too deeply into it. Another Thackeray would be required to do it full justice.

spell for the Unionists would be the death blow of the Liberal party, and that result is far from improbable unless Gladstone contrives to make
more favorable impression upon the public than he has yet done.
This, however, is taking a look ahead of the present. We are in the midst of the dull session, and unless the Irishmen break suddenly into that dullness parliamentary proceedings will cease to interest any one but officials. The Scotch local government bill; the Basin Draine age bill, who can strike any fire out of such material as these? They are very useful, no doubt, but heavy beyond power of words to describe. In every phase of liscussion upon them the heavier they will became,

There hav been many earthquakes within the period covered by these dates that have spread over vast extents of the earth's surface and caused immense losses of life, but estimates as to the number are not given, One instance shows how the human race has been depleted from this cause. In the kingdom of Naples, from 1783 10 1857, a period of seventy-five years, the loss of life by earthquakes was 110,000, or at the rate of more than 1.500 a year, out of a population of 6,000,000. The country surrounding the Medit- teranean and the inter-tropical area from which the American Cordilleras spring may be regarded as the centers of earthquake activity, though some of the greatest earthquakes of all time have occurred in Eastern Asia and the East Indies,
Well, then, the political shutters are, so to speak, put up for nearly a fortnight, and 1 do not hear any expressions of sorrow or regret. As usual, the Industrious correspondent who has to supply lively paragraphs for the London and provincial newspapers finds himself_compelled | Chicago Journal. to fall back on Lord Randolph Churchill.
What has the leader of the young democracy been doing now? It appears that once this week he didn't go out to dinner and once he did, and each incident is dealt with in a most masterly manner by skilful journalists. He failed to go to W. H. Smith's and never apologized. Great is the wrath of Smith in consequence. He cries aloud for vengeance, and Randoloph Churchill

Then it appears that this irrepressible Randolph went to dinner at Sir Charles Russell's and there met among others Mr. Gladstone and Mr. Parnell And why not? Does anybody suppose that a man in Lord Randolph's position has never met these remarkable leaders of the party before. Does it follow that the guest imbibes all his fellow guests' opinions with his host's wines ?
It does not do in these days for any man to shut himself up in a handbox, and it he moves about the world like other people he very likely comes into contact with a Gladstonian, a Parnellite, a Sollsburyite, even a Goschenite, for it is said that a few odd persons are to be found who call themselves by the last name.
As for Lord Randolph being, angry with Charles Russell for leading him into auch galore, believe it not. He is not a man to get angry
