WOMEN are curious creatures. A young lady will declare that the men are all alike, and give us to understand that she can have anybody she chooses; and for all this, if a fellow gives her the jilt, she'll bring an action against him for breach of promise, and fix her damages high among the big figures, as though there wasn't another male biped without feathers on the earth, which is why we remark that women are curious
creatures.
HERE is a fashion item for our lady readers. American lady who has introduced digitated shoes has had three pairs made for herself. For the house is one made of tan- coloured andressed kid and lined throughout except in the toes and over the instep, with rose- pink satin. They button tightly, to the knee. Another pair for evening wear, is made of pick-white kid, almost the colour of her com- plexion, and are fastened with pearl buttons. They cost 18 dole. For outdoor she has a pair made of dark-brown dogskin, with soles of pliable leather, and lacing above the knee. Speaking of them lately she said: "It seems to me heathenish to crowd the tocs altogether in tight shoes. Why should we crowd our toes all together and let our fingers go fres? Each toe should be as separate as each finger. You have no idea with what comfort and case I walk, now that I have adopted these shoes. Of course I cannot wear them in the city at present, but I bope soon to be able to do so, for I am sure many women of sense will adopt them." This all sounds very well, but what is she going to do about her coras?

Hon. F. Ryrie-Your Excellency, by the with. drawal of that clause with regard to the deposi tions you have certainly removed one serous stumbling block, but I think there are several more. One grave matter is with regard to the guarantee that after the prisoner is given up no torture will be used. That has always been a very great point in extradition cases, but nothing is said about it in this Bill. If it were proved that we, a Christian Government, were giving up fore the English Parliament and there would men, to be tortured, it would be at once brought

The question is, shall we give up men who have been only a month or two in the colony, to be tortured ? is such a proceeding right? You would not find any Consul in China who would give security that the men should not be tortured, I have spoken to many of the Consuls about the maiter. Are we, as part of the British nation, to give up these poor creatures to be tortured ? I am certain the people in England will not sland it. There is no provision in this Bill, however, to prevent it being done.

HONGKONG, TUESDAY, MAY 28, 1859. A FEW weeks ago our Wyndham Street contemporaries indulged in some critical antics condemnatory of the action of Mr. J. J. FRANCIS, Q.C., at the Sanitary Board in connection with a grievous nuisance most properly brought to light by Major General Goxpox, the Superintendent of Police. The learned Q.C., had ventured to point our different sections of the Ordinances, under which the Surveyor General could be held responsible. This our contemporaries received with shrieks. of derision, and the learned gentleman was accused of endeavouring to make the pro- ceedings of the Sanktary Board ridiculous. We learn, however, by recent Indian advices that the Municipal Council of Calcutta have been indicted at the Criminal Sessions there before Mr. Justice Norra for committing a nuisance by filling a certain tank with street refuse and unhealthy rubbish. Perhaps this fact will convince the sapient❘ THE American watch factories use the smallest scribblers of Wyndham Street, that Mr. screws in the world. These are cut from steel wire by a machine.
