The Secretary, (Mr. Gourdin) read the notice convening the meeting, which stated that the business was the confirmation of the following resolution

It seems to us that the Directors of the Steam Launch Company owe a duty both to their shareholders and the community' generally in connection with this "corner." The Company was started rather to meet a supposed public want than as a means of making money, and yet it has become in a few short months one of the most notorious instruments of unscrupulous gambling this colony has ever known... In the face of the present scandalous state of affairs, is it not the duty of the Directors. a public obligation, to discover, the real insligators of this bull movement, and to trace it'te its source? It is currently reported that some person, or persons, officially connected with the management of the Steam Launch Company is mixed up in these Stock Exchange scandals, which in itself is sufficient to justify an imme- diate and searching inquiry. We have no particular sympathy for gamblers in 'margins,' and hold generally that the man who binds himself to deliver on some future date shares which he never

possessed, does so at his own risk. He makes this contract on certain information, real or assured, in the expectation of the value of the shares nominally decreasing and thereby leaving him a margin of profit; if his calculations are at fault and the margin of difference is on the wrong side, it is only right that he should be called upon to fairly meet his obligations-always assuming that they have been legitimately incurred, that is to say, by the ordinary fluctuations in the price current, and under circumstances which, the law would
