On the evening of the 8th inst., a Chinawoman, the wife of Ismail, a Police Court interpreter, was in a 'ricksha near Murray Barracks when someone came behind, lifted the hood, of the vehicle, and anatched her earrings, which were worth $100. Yesterday a bricklayer tried to` pawn the pearls which were in them, and was arrested. This morning at the Police Court he was committed to gaol for six months. THE Courrier d'Haiphong of the 6th instant publishes some correspondence from Monkay, in which a detailed account is given of the skirmishes the French forces had with the native rebels 28th and 29th December last. The enemy attacked in great force the French military stations, and after a great deal of fighting, succeeded in capturing a blockhouse. A French sergeant and several'men were killed' during the conflict, which showed no signs of abating on the rst inst.

That the Committee appointed to consider the Bye-Laws under Sub-section 6 of Section 13 of "The Public Health Ordinance, 1887," be discharged, and that the Executive branch of the Sanitary Board be called upon to submit for the consideration of the Board a set of draft Bye-Laws under this Sub-section.
AT five o'clock this afternoon a twin-screw cruiser built for the Imperial Maritime Customs was launched from the Kowloon Dock, in the presence of Mr. F. A. Morgan, Commissioner of Customs, and a number of officialș. The christ- ening ceremony was performed by Miss Morgan. The vessel was named the Lung Tsing, and is the first of the kind built at Kowloon. She is 119 ft. long, 18 ft. beam, 8 ft. deep, and draws 3 ft. when ready for sca. This accident, says our contemporary, is the more to be regretted as the Victoria was only just out of dock in Hongkong, where she had sustained some slight damage by touching a rock whilst at anchor in harbour, and had, in addition, been docked at Nagasaki for printing, etc, the voyage previously. Capt. Coundon, with whom all who know him will sincerely sympathise in his misfortunts, has given the following report :---

Gridiron was made a bot favorite and cut out the running just in front of Norman, with Rustic tailed off from the fall of the flag. The leading pair kept together, Norman gamely responding to the repeated calls of his rider, until two hundred yards from home, where Gridiron drew away and looked like winning in a canter. Entering the straight, however, Norman came Will'n wet sail and Mr. Hutchings had to do all he knew to win by three quarters of a length, which would have been the other way had Norman been more judiciously ridden.
