THE N. C. Daily News reports that on the morning of the 1st inst, an accident happened on the river. The Alwine Styd arrived and anchored at 10,to off the C.M.S.N. The flood tide was running very strong, and the steamerswing. round so rapidly that she could not be stopped, and she drifted on top of some ballast junks alongside the P. & O, Co.'s steamer Sutlej, ly at the Associated Wharves. The Junks, four of which were badly damaged, broke adrlit, and three of them afterwards sank. As soon as the accident was noticed, the steam pinnace from the U.S.S. Marion was sent to render assistance, and took two of the difting junks in tow, but when in the "chow chow " water off the Garden, the tow line fouled the propeller of the pinnace thus disabling her, so that junks and pinnace drifted helplessly up to the E-wo jetty, where they stranded, It is reported that one Chinaman

THE Bangkok Times reports the following occurrence on the Meinam :-As a steam launch was towing about fourteen rice boats up the Meinam on the 20th December (with the tide), careless steering on one of the foremost lighters caused the whole line to yaw the latter craft to such an extent that seven, ran foul athwart the bows of the Long Hin. After great confusion, consequent upon such a mishap, the tow rope was severed and the whole feet, entirely beyond control, drified onwards and collided with terrific violence against the Goliah, laying anchored a little further up stream. From all appearance Some considerable damage was caused to the vessel and we should be glad to hear that some. one has been made to pay for such carelessness.
THE Rangoon Times of the 9th ulto, gives the following description of the arrival of the new Viceroy :--Lord Lansdowne's reception was a most magnificent and loyal display; all the shipping in the river has been decked with flags, the Railway Station and the Howrah bridge were gay with arches of verdure and figs bearing suitable inscriptions, such as "success attend your rule," "welcome to Calcatta," &c. Much bunting was also displayed on the route, especially in Old Court House Street.. A guard of honour of Railway Volunteers were on the platform, where the Military and Private Secretaries to the Viceroy, the Aides-de-camps, the Commissioner of Burdwan Division, the Secre

Railway, and the leading inhabitants of Howrah, with many ladies, for whom raised seats had been provided, were in waiting. Outside the Station, a guard of honour of the Infantry with Band and Colours was in waiting. The route to Government House was lined throughout with the Calcutta-Volunteers, the Leinster and Derby Regiments, and the 3rd and 7th Native Infantry; the Body Guard and Mounted. Volunteers forming, the escort; at Government House a guard of honour, made up of the Leinster Regiment, and representa- tives of all arms of the Presidency Volunteers,

The Lieutenant Governor of Bengal waited at the foot of the stairs of the Government House, and Lord Dufferin and the members of Council at the top of the Grand Staircase, which was also densely crowded with Civil and Military

Court this morning before Mr. Justice Leach. In itself the 'case was a very antinary one, being one in which James Sorabjee Lucas, an Indian merchant in Queen's Road Fast, sued one Curiambux. formerly a condiment-maker in Brisbane, and more lately a curio dealer in Beaconsfield Arcade, for $803 69, money dvanced, &c. The case derived its interest 'rom the fact that there had been an affaire de cwar between the plaintiff and the defendant's sister-in-law, a good looking Australia girl of or three and twenty, and that the love- let ers which had passed said to be unusually amusing-were to be read by the defendant's Irgal representative. The reporters sharpened there leads, the Court officials lounged about and waited, the plaintiff appeared uneasy, inil everything seemed promising. Mr. Wilson, 11.6 plaintiff's solicitor, made no opening speech, which augured favorably, and his client pro- ceeded to detail how he had been neighbour to the defendant since June 1887, how they had get friendly, Mrs. Curiambux' sometimes mind- bring minded by him, and Mr. Curiambux ng his shop and sometimes Curiambux' abop getting him to guarantee his credit at auction sales. In December Curiambux decided to sell off and go to Australia, and when they came to settle up they differed about the indebtedness -hence the action. This took about an hour and a half to elicit, Mr. Francis confining his cross- examination to financial details. At length the delicate subject was broached by the question.

She did not refuse-she said she was only a child, and in two or three years she might think, of it.

No. Why I lent them my furniture and found them food when they moved.
Mr. Francis stopped to read a letter, at which ho seemed vastly tickled, and proceeded:Was not there a little quarrel in October 7
No, 1 did not quarrel.
