The prosecutor has not placed before us such evidence as would satisfy us that there was no trespass on his part. The question therefors remains of the alleged use of the knife. When howevet, he came up to accused he was sure he saw Mr. Michell's two hands bare. Then he looked down and saw Mr. Michell with his hand on knife. He saw'ne blow. Then both men fell

CAIRO, November 23rd. General Dormer is of opinion that it will be necessary to increase the Egyptian army to 16,000 men, thus enabling the Egyptian Government to capture the rebel strongholds at Suakim, crush the rehellion, advance on Dengola, and then Iranquillize the Soudan.
LONDON, November 24th. The statement made by the Times that a treaty had been concluded for a Russian protec torate over Corea is denied at St. Petersburg.
PARIS, November 24th. The animosity which exists between different political partirs in France, and especially between the Boulangists and Republicana, is becoming serious. Charges of peculation and Jobbery against certain members of the Chamber; of Depuiles are being published, and the Boultn gists and Conservatives accuse M. Floquet of meditating a coup d'état..

wives who could not only sing but also cook) there is really no reason why a man should not have seneral in order to thoroughly experience what it means to be married. He thus might have a wife to dress and a wife to kee› house, a wife for the carriage, and a wife for drawing room recep tions. Indeed there is no limit to the number. He might have a walking-costume wife, a winter costume wife, a wife for fancy dress carnivals, and a wife for the apparel of the ordinary ball. To make him perfectly happy he would require a button-sewing wife and a chop-grilling wife, one whose speciality was warming slippers and another whose strong point was the wearing of a spring-bonnet, and even then, perhaps, he would be miserable. We are told that in Heaven there is neither marriage nor giving in marriage. The cynical man will admit that that would be Heaven indeed. Sydney Bulletin.
NEW YORK'S SCOTCH QUARTER.
The Scotch residents in New York have a territory of their own. The streets of New York above Canal were laid out at right angles, with the exception of the patch of land known as Greenwich Village, wherein the streets were constructed on a diagonal basis. By reason of this there is a triangle between the point where the diagonal streets stop and the streets at sight angles begin. It is at what is called Jackson quare, a half-acre of green, having for its three- fenced sides Greenwich Avenue, Eighth Avenue and Horatio Street. Facing it is Caledonia Hall. About it are Scotch taverns, and the streets of the vicinity-Horatio, Jane, Ganie voort and West Twelfth-have a full comple ment of Scotchnien. It is so entirely out of the line of ordinary travel, so inaccessible and so remote, both from tenements and thoroughfares as to be an almost unknown locality to the great majority of New Yorkers.
