TO-DAY.
THE SHARE MARKET,
5 o'clock. Another stirring sensation on the Rialto Early this morning a determined. rush, was minde by the noble army of Bulis on China Sugars, and a very considerable business was done for delivery on the 30th inst. at from 186 to #88, and likewise for the, end of February at 90 and 91. As, however, the supply of shares, both for cash and on time, seemed inexhaustible, the attacking party gradually lost courage-or got to the end of their wether-and the stock dropped just as suddenly as it was rushed up, and offers to sell at 186 for cash and 189 February being allowed to pass disre- garded. Solar as we can see--but we don't pretend to be inside the mystic circle- a very daing attempt had been organised to create a "corner," and like many other, very creditable efforts it just failed to come off. As the immortal Robbie Burns put it, the best laid schemes of mice and men, aft gang agley"-and even the all-powerful .Chinese Syndicate can't, do impossibilities, andthey will exercise a very wise discre- tion in recognising that very hard fact in good time. There are a number of others very heavily involved in the very dangerous gambling vortex of the local Share Market to whom a few words of wholesome counsel may not come amiss. We refer to clerks, assistants and other employés in public companies and private firms, young men with salaries averaging from $150 to $250 per month, whose names are being freely bandied about in con- nection with transactions amounting to many thousands of dollars. The notion of professional share traffickers, backed up by any amount of money and local influence, being "cornered " at their own game by a few sanguine and thoughtless youths and oldsters too-would be too

absurd for serious consideration any where CHINA COAST METEOROLOGICAL but in Hongkong. And, in Hongkong? Well, the old story about the moths and the lamp applies, The young "bulls " will singe their wings, and then they will disappear. Of course we know that ordinary bulls do not possess wings, but we' speak metaphorically. To any thinking man the end of all this reckless gambling okie Is inevitable. There will be a whole- salp sacking" from public and private offices of ail these far too clever
employés-and we are hot quite sure that such a drastic measure would not be a very desirable result. We trust the well- Intended hint conveyed in the foregoing remarks will not be løst sight of by those whom it may concern. The matter is certain to turn up in a much more disagree. able form later on.
Docks, for reasons, which nobody can understand, are gradually improving, and business was done to-day at 40 and 41 per cent, premium, for the end, of the year, and there are cash buyers at 38. As a legitimate investment this steek is scarcely worth the par quotation, as for several years to come 6 per cent. per annum is the largest dividend that reasonably can be expected; what it may be worth as an instrument. of gambling we leave the professionals and their dupes to decide.
