TAKU.

(FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.)

Taku, 6th August, 1888.. During the past week we have been getting our summer rains which have very frequently been accompanied by thunder and lightning There is very little cargo coming north fro Shanghai, and much has been the case for thr inst month consequently there has been very little lightering at the "Bar"

For the first time this year we have bee visited by the German barque Galveston That vessel is from Fonebow, and as the compe tition between the rival Tug and Lighter Com- panies is just as keen as ever, she gets all her lightering done for $300-a ship of thirteen thousand piculs. Not only does she get her lightering done for $300, but this sum also includes the cast of putting on board her com plement of ballast at the Outer Anchoragt. Seeing that the charge for putting ballast on board of a ship outside the “Bar" is 75 centr per ton, you will readily see that there is a very Smallunargia left for lighterage and coolie hire..

8th August, 1888.

The senior engineer of the Taku Tug & Lighter

Co. has been very fortunate in securing the position of chief engineer of the steamer Sinn Cheng, which belongs to the French Syndicate, and will join the steamer in Shanghai. Mr. McMurray left this port yesterday. We con gratulate this gentleman on his good fortune in getting employment before the expiration of his services in the Taka Tug and Lighter Company. from which he has been dismissed, while being one of the oldest engineers in the Company. Whilst feeling sodry to lose his presence from among us, we wish him success in his new undertaking. We are not yet tid of the earth tremor. Al daybreak yesterday a very slight shock was felt by those of our community who were not fortunate enough to be enjoying.their slumbers.

We hear that the dredger Tau Hae, which was brought from Port Arthur, arriving here on the 6th of June Inst, will return to that port shonly. She came here to undergo the annual repairing, cleaning, and painting-Shanghai

The Governor is doing his best to prevent trouble at the coming examination. He has issued a proclamation that the store-keepers THE Steamship should not raise their prices exorbitantly, but must sell-justly during the examinatish time. The Taoini, Prefect, and Magistrate have together. ssued a proclamatian forbidding gambling houses and houses of prostitution. Furthermore it is enjoined that if such persons wish to rent, the landlord must first inform, the Magistrate, and if he fails to do so he will lose control and rent of his house for three months. Thus we. see that in some respects missionaries, gamblers and courtesans are classes together. If they wish to purchase and to rent, the landlord must

irst inform the local authorities.

It is evident that the toleration of Christianity is narrowing itself down, notwithstanding, new treaties and new Imperial Elicts.-N. C." Daily, News.

30th July, 1888. The Governor of this province has just returned from a three weeks'absenceonimportant business. He started forth to look after the state of the extinct Vellow River. He found a little water in the old bed, saw his subordinates at work on the embankments, heard rumours of the speedy return of the Yellow River from Honan, but felt calm and satisfaction when he saw the rain coming down in torrents, and the great improbability of the successful filling up of the gap in Honan, Buch we judge to be his feelings.

His other and more important business was to examine into the matter of the rebellion that arose at Chang Ch'in-chen. Here was a matter that might well give the Governor cause of anxiety. A General, specially the friend of the Governor and appointed by him to a high ong military position, is suddenly slain by his soldiers, wala and this, too, because the just wages of the soldiers had failed to be given, eliber from neglect 70% day at the encampment itselfor at the capital Such an unusual occurrence must be explained In some way or the Censors will be after the Governor in due earnest. Probably the Memorial of the Governor will appear in low days in the Paking Gazette, and we will then know the best way to get out of such difficulties. The rebellions soldius in the meanwhile have mostly crossed the Hongkong Observatory, 24th August, 1888.7

strikes a thoughtful man with more force HERE is no feature of our civilised life that

than the neglect of LIFE ASSURANCE, By payment of a small 'quasterly subscription any man of good health can secure a very large sum to his family in case of premature death, yet hundreds of families brought up in confort- perhaps in luxury-are left in extreme poverty every year from the bread winner having neglected to assure his life. In the East many a man lives up to his income, knowing well that if death cut him off suddenly, his wife and children would be left almost wholly unprovided All this can be prevented by Life Assurance.
