You may ask all classes-all nationalities, to whom his skill; was ever accessible, and to whom he begrudged no service. His was a life fruitful in every good work; His hands were ever-ready--too ready, for his last illness was brought on by his sacrificing prudence to duty His life was a sojourn and a pilgrimage, and the close came before he was long past the prime of him; how much good he did how much better at Aix-les-Bains he left this world, and this Colony in particular, for his religion and labours! Now he has gone from us, and we rejoice to think that his weariness and pain are over. What remains for us to do is to follow his example, to take up his duties, to live as he lived to trust as he trusted.. to serve as he served, and to seek and find Abiding City to which he has gone before.

The system of burning the bodies of the dead in this colony, though never practiced with deceased Chinamen or with Europeans, as far as we are aware, is yet far from being uncommon, and is always strictly carried out in all cases of death amongst the Hindca community, whose numbers are, however, small, and confined prin- cipally to police constables and gue lascars. A man belonging to the latter class died yesterday, and was cremated, according to the funeral rites of hisreligion, this morning, carly. The observances of this custom and the methods of carrying it out; are well known to all who have resided for any length of time in India, but as they are not so well understood in Hongkong, we append treated this morning. The dead man was a Sikh, and in religion a Hiadoo, of which there are in British India fully twenty different castes. This morning, soon after daylight, his friends and. acquaintances, to the number of about twenty, met outside the door of his but at Wanchai, carrying bambooladder. Upon this the body was placed, dressed carefully in clean white ordinary day clothing (not uniform) common to his caste shoes put on the feet and turban wound around the head. The pall was a somewhat large linen covering. The nearest relations or best friends of the deceased then, without further ceremony, picked up the body thus laid out, and started for the burning ground, followed by all assembled friends, who relieved them of their solemn burthen at short and regular intervals the most distani acquaintandes coming last.
