5 o'clock. China Sugars have been made the medium of another of those, startling surprises for which our local share market. has so long been notorious. For some days past the quotation for this stock has been gradually improving, and this morning There was quite a boom," Business being done to a considerable éxtent ft interme diate rates from 18 to 166 per share for cash, and also at 155 for July and 156 for September. Nobody seemed to have any reliable knowledge of what caused the sensation, but of course the usual rumours about a Chinese Syndicate, and that the Company had advantageouslyk dispose of some of its non-productive properties were generally current, This rush on China Sugars, ift did nothing else, proved quite a windfall for the industrious fraternity of brokers, who have been so much down on their luck lately that we have seriously contemplated recommending the Managing Director to put the vestibule ofthe Hongkong Hotel_into_mourning During the afternoon it became evident that there was a screw loose somewhere in the China Sugars "boóm;" whether the Chinese Syndicate bad collapsed or the reported sale of poor old Harris' property- at Swatow for Give lakhs of dollars-had- burst up was a matter of uncertainty, but anyhow, Sugar shares flooded the market and sales were booked at rates ranging downwards from 156 to 150, the stock eventually closing with sellers at 15. What the quotation may be to-morrow we are, quite unable to hazard a Luess, not possessing the prophetic attributes of our friends "the chosen people." "Docks have slightly improved their position to-day; some shares have changed hands at 33, and at this figure the stock is fairly firm. improvement in Steamboats has also to be recorded, business having been arranged for cash at go, but there are further sellers. Panjoms have declined to 114, and -are-for-the-moment-out-of-favor. A few
