The Independente, in alluding to the Portuguese graph colonies, has the following: "Among our colonial possessions there are some which are nothing but ruins indicating a golden and glorious past, and others which are very similar to the former because of the impression, they produce in one who meditates on what they are and what they ought to be. Is it in this manner that the nation pretends to maintain their colonies as memories of the past? This cannot surely be called maintaining, but abandoning them. If we cannot uphold their past glory by deeds worthy of it, let the colonies disappear rather than be standing monuments of our disgrace," WE read that a Townsville philanthropist, Townsville is in Queensland-who always comes

THE German Army is comparatively, weak in cavalry, counting on its war footing but Coo squadrons, making 3,300 officers and 112,000 sabres (exclusives of non-combatants); white that of Austria-Hungary is less numerous than. the German force. In fact, Russia alone, by calling upon her cavalry in Asia, can at once place in line of battle a cavalry force equal to that of Germany and Austria-Hungary combined, In infantry and artillery the Austria-Gerran Armies are far superior to Russia. In case of war, cavalry, beyond all doubt, will play a more than ever important rôle.
