When captured by the French it had a salubrity of the pountry prevail. It is not con. population of about one hundred thousand, and sidered that the soldiers suffered from insanitary has since greatly increased. It was fortified by arrangements on shipboard ; invalide of arrival, French officers (according to Vauban's method), they were: exposed to peculiar hardships, and in the service of the King of Annam-"The suffered-most-in-regions which were once toler-- citadel is a striking feature of the city; aably healthy, but which from the devastations of beautiful lake beyond the city, where Chinese protracted internecine strife were deserteil, lands and Annmese first fought, is another. The newly built foreign city resembles Haiphong; house building and public works occupy mul titudes of native workmen. Narrow tramways occupy the principal streets, but for public works and the transfer of troops from post to post only: the cars are drawn by men, borses, or bullocks, As throughout the East, where smooth roads are found, this city teems with jinricshas-mans ver carriages, an Invention of an American missionary in Japan. The Annamnese being a fcelle fulk, these light and useful vehicles require here two instead of one man to draw them.

Visitors to this city arc'always directed to see its chief "lion," a colossal bronze image of "the Great Buddha," which is also so named in hooks, but I discovered it to be an image of Kuang-ti, the Chinese Mars. It is evidently not an "Annamese work, but Japanese, perhaps by some of those who escaped from Nagasaki during the persecution of Christians there.

It is more than probable that the inlaid work, carving and.cmbroideries- unique and made

The Aunamese portion of the city presents a, somewhat foreign aspect-broad streets, two- sired brick houses, tiled roofs, contrasting stro, ly with the bamboo er mud walls and thatched roofs found elsewhere.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

9th February, 1829. 'I paid a visit the other day to the Imperial elephants of which two-a male and female are still alive. In winter they are kept in houses with thick wooden floors, but it summer they are sometimes taken outside, and on the dah | day of the 6th moon they are inkan to the city "mnoat”and the male-a very large and håndsome" animal-accompanies the Empress to the Temple. of Heaven. They never sre each other, and aro which boiled rice is placed. The compound in -fed on straw tied up in bundles in the side of which their houses stand is very large, and originally there must have been homes for a couple of scores of elephants, but most of the houses are now ronfieiss. Those still living have, heen. taught a number of tricks, such as to courtsey, to kotow, blow, their trumpets, cat and drink when required, etc. Perhaps the urinese who are to send decennial tribute to China may bring some elephants with their fist mission and so replenish our stuck.

After the elephants we went to the excution ground where we found nine heads of lately decspitated criminals exposed in baskets. A large multitude stood around gaping at the heads, the faces of which were quite red coloured, not pale; whether this is the result of the cold r,of the sudden shock at the moment of decapi

from some other cause it is impossible to say. The heads are allowed to remain there for months; the street is a busy one, too, a large vegetable ma ket being held in it.

At the closetation, the bleeding vessels being constricted; or of the day military bands entertain sauntereis -who-promenade-the-borders of the_lille_lake, an betimes the Socidid Hippique affords musement by their races, which are conducted with much spirit. Again, theatrical fraupes wander to this end of the French world, and recently the journals gave glowing accounts of a charity ball (a Secidit de Secours Mutuels de bienfaisance has just been formed). Placards announcing pigeon shooting have been seized upon by a bill poster to attract sportsmen,-hó do not readily fill their bags in the country. A citizen apologetically explained-to-me-that- pigeon shooting was a device resorted to by a Pace of poor devils just to raise the wind, and that such amusements were not fashionable,

in L'Avenir de Tongking an advertisement appears which discloses the irisis fact that iminigrants sometimes. bring their domestic infelicities into the Colony, "An unlucky bus- band (himself doubtless most to blame) cautions the public against selling merchandise to his wife-except at their own risk. On the whole a superficial observer is likely to arrive at the conclusion that, at best, life in this capital is not particularly enjoyable.

The costume ball at the Inspector General's has come off successfully. Everything in the way of preparation, had been done, both for the amusement and comfort of the guests, and the result has been most satisfactory. During the first half of the evening the guests wore masks and this gave opportunities for the persistage and humour usual 'at such scenes, and as many people, but as Chinese is the mode of writing in

I wish I could describe some of this country, an undertaking of that description the ladies' and gentlemen's dresses, but I cannot would be utterly futile, for only children of the well-to-do can spend the necessary time attempt to do so. About a hundred and twenty guests were present. The Polonaise was danced school, to learn Chinese written characters,

Sixty-nine schools have been recently estab- lished for teaching this method of reading the vernacular, and applications have been made for over, forty more; in fine, these schools are desired in all large towns.

Absence of books is a bar to the utility of reading quoc-ng, but in due time a vernacular literature will be provided; already a dictionary has been published, and an official organ is issued at Saigon for the use of Franco-Annamese citizens who have acquired alphabetined An-

Considered philologically, the attempt to supersede Chincac characters by an alphabet is CHINA COAST MET FOROLOGICAL highly interesting; its practicability has been amply demonstrated. Missionaries at Ningpo have for more than a score of yeare employed Roman letters, in the form of a syllabary, and have published large portions of the Sacred Scriptures, with various religious and sacular works, in those dialcets for the use of those who- can never command time requisite for learning characters. In China it is not contemplated to supersede Chinese writing, which is neither practicable nor desirable, but in Annam, al; habet car and ought to supersede syllabic writing.
