Torpedo was nominally favorite at a to 1, and 5 to 1 was offered bar one. Hornpipe, Safety and Andantino made joint run- ning with Ambassador and Triumph, close toge ther, Piccadilly next, and Torpedo lying off. There were but few changes of importance until after passing the stand a second time, when Reefer came out from the ruck and closed with bis stable companion, who still led the field at a merry pace, but immediately afterwards drop- ped away beaten. At the Widow's Monument the winner of the Maidens showed prominently, Ambassador (at the same time, hanging out signals of distress. Entering the straight, Picca dily led from Hompips, closely attended by Herschel Andantino, Nectar and Triumph, and to these half dozen the finish was confined, Mr. Dallas ultimately winning easily on Piccadilly by two lengths from Herschel, with Hornpipe beaten a length for third place. Nectar was fourth, Triumph fifth, and Andantino sixth Torpedo pulled up lame.
