THE CANTON MURDER CASE.
VERDICT OF MANSLAUGHTER. LOCAN SENTENCED TO SEVEN YEARS IML- PRISONMENT.
(PROM OUR SPECIAL REPORTER.)
CANTON, 28th Sept., 1983. Proceedings in this case were resumed this morning when Mr. A. G. Wise addressed the Court for the defence in a very able speech last Ing about two hours. The only evidence put in were the depositions of Li Chok Wan, and Reng King the school-master, taken at the preliminary inquiry held by Dr.Hance, the acting British Consul.
The Crown Advocate (Mr. H. F. Wilkinson) then replied at considerable length after which the Chief Justice (Sir Richard T. Rennie) read through the evidence and briefly charged the jury,
The Jury retired at five minutes past four and were absent fifty minutes. They resumed their places in the box at 4.55, the court room at this period being densely packed. Legan was calm and collected throughout the proceedings, but appeared deeply affected at the entrance of the jury. In reply to the usual questions the jury returned an unanimous verdict of manslaughter against the prisoner. His lordship asked if he had anything to say why judgment should not be pronounced against him, Logan answering in a firm voice "I have none." His Lordship then formally sentenced the prisoner to impri
sonment for seven years.

The Times commenting on the repulse at Phukai says:-It must be becoming evident to the French themselves that they have undertaken something more than a promenade. We venture them are already asking themselves whether the to think that the more sober and serious among game, is worth the candle. With a sufficient expenditure of men and money-an expenditure, however, which will probably greatly exceed the original estimates-there is no doubt that France can reduce the Annamese towns one after the other. She will find it, however, a good deal more difficult-to-break-down-Annamese oppos-- ition in the swamps and jungles. "If the French ignore the officious Chinese war they will and their difficulties in Tong-King very seriously in- creased and prolonged by the material and moral countenance given to their enemies. on the other hand, they recognise and openly, resent Chinese intermeddling in the affairs of Tong-King, they will find their present enter. prise the mere perlude to a more formidable one. In a war with China, France would no doubt be victorious, but the victory itself would be substantially a defeat. For what are our

No one even in France can serious'y suppose that Frenchmen will go and live in that delectable region. The French do not colonise, even when the condi- tions are much more favourable. They have no aptitude for the work, and no pressure at home to force them to undertake it. If Tong-King were as much at their disposal as Algiers they would never have more than official possession. They would send out a staff of officials, who would be followed by sufficient tradesmen to supply them with the nearest attainable imita- tions of Parisian shops, but there the thing "would end. Is it worth while for such a result to go through what has already been done, let alone the much greater labours that are probably in store? The feverish restlessness which the French Government has recently dis- played cannot be limited and guarded exactly as it might wish. When important affairs are at
