As the number of the bandits swelled they boldly lighted their torches and went to the place of attack. The leaders had provided themselves with an immense number of thorns with two or three points. These, were to be thrown behind them in case they were pursued. The barefooted pursuers were, soon checked by them. The robbers stationed guards on the roads near by to prevent interference and keep open a way of escape. They took with them a long stone, with ropes at each end. Four men swinging this stone to and fro would bang in the strongest door. Entering in the robbers plan- dered at will, unless the force within happened to be too strong, when a retreat quickly followed. The boldness of these robbers was once ex- hibited at Kakchich itself. A large cargo-boat filled with men landed at the pier of Bradley & They lighted their latches, hurled their stinkpots about to intimidate the watchmen and others, and then broke in the godowns, in- tending deliberately to load their boat with bean cake of course, a slow and tedious operation, They seemed notto have had the slightest regard for all the foreigners living immediately at hand They supposed foreigners were like natives, and casily frightened, but in this instance, they more than met their match. Members of the Firm of Messrs. Bradley & Co. were soon out. They quickly rallied their gigmen. They charged on the assailants. Finding it becoming hot, the latter hastily pushed off and were soon in the stream and on their flight up the bay. Bradley Co's gigs were lowered and were joined by some other gigs. A well-armed party then started after the pirates. They soon came up with them and commenced firing upon them. The pirates pulled away for dear life. Getting into aboal water, they deserted the boat and were soon lost on shore. The boat was brought back in triumph. There were several blood spots on it, showing that some of the shots had taken effect. Nobody ever came to claim the boat.
