far as the actual transfer of shares is con- ESMERALDA, British sicanfer, 395, G. Wright ANERLEY, British steamer, 1,356, Strachan, 24 of the GOOD WILL, FITTINGS, and FURNI; [Mmunity of Hongkong, and Visitors, that of FOUR DOLLARS per Annum. It is an ex-
cerned, to report from the Stock Exchange this morning. Business generally is un- usually quiet. A few minor transactions in various stocks have come under our observation; but no movement of con- sequence has taken place. Banks remain In a somewhat equivocal position; business from Shanghai-is-reported, but-in local circles the desire to sell is evident in all direċ- tions. Some inconsiderable time tranfers at 206 and also at 207 per cent. premium for the end of the present month; have been booked, and a few shares are also said to have changed hands atzio for August 31st, It is difficult to make any reliable prediction with regard to Banks; still, according to market indications, which seldom deceive, one would be almost justified in looking for a considerable fall in the market value of the stock during the next few weeks. Chinese Insurances are rather weaker than
has been the case, sellers offering to come to terms at 230 per share. Hongkong Fires are again steadily rising in popular favor, sales having been booked at the in- creased rate of 3524. Docks remain firm, with cash buyers at 58 per cent. premium. On time, shares would be taken up at 59 for July 31st; but there are sellers at 60. Nothing in Sugars has been reported ;. but there is a slight demand for Luzons at 78. Other quotations speak for themselves.
At the end of last month we published some correspondence, and made several observations regarding one or two flagrant instances in which the sellers of shares on time, had been unable, when the date of delivery arrived. either to hand over the shares or pay up the differences. As the cases more particularly referred to must need not travel be well known we .over beaten ground recapitulating the circumstances connected with what has for a long time been very properly looked upon as a popular grievance. Suffice it to say: we learn on good authority that the legal lability of the seller will shortly be tested' In a court of law. One seller who had neither shares nor margin to work upon, and who is said to have calmly repudiated the transactions, will be regu Jarly proceeded against for the amount of differences between the rate at date of sale, and the quotation when the scrip was to be taken up. The result of this experiment will be watched with interest by the commercial community; in any case k must tend to beneficial results.
