A SHORT time ago we stated on the authority of a Shanghai correspondent that it had beed "de- cided to form the old established and well known Shanghai firo of Hall and Holtz into a Co- Operative Company, and we now beg to direct attention to the abridged prospectus of the new concern, published in our advertising columns. The capital of the Company has been fixed at T's, 300,000, in six thousand shares of Tils. 50 each five thousard shares being offered to the public for subscription. After a careful_perusal of the prospectus, it would appear to us, taking the figures set down as the results of. Messrs. Hall and loltz's business during the past four years as a basis, that an enterprise of this kind, economically managed on the co-operative principle proposed, cannot fail to achieve the remarkable success which has attended similar undertakings at home. It will be noted that applications for shares in Hongkong must be made to Mesers, Gilman & Co.

The Tai-Chow pirate chief and some of his followers emerged from their mountain homes outside of the City of Tai-Chow last Wednesday. They had "got wind" of official baggage and dollars having to cross the hills into the city; they came out to intercept them but were just one day too late. The redoubtable chief is gaining rather than losing his hold on the peasantry. A report (true or false) is cal culated to farther augment his popularity with the populace. A small tradesman said to be oppressive to those who got into his power, who refused to help anyone in their poverty or allic tion, was getting money fast! John Innocent, who, in a few well chosen words, opened the proceedings and then called upon the Linnets to sing and dance in accordance with the programme, which they did with great ability. The two "Linnets" who sang the "Tats" Farewell" and the "Soldiers' Return" mani- ifested ability of no mean order, and were greeted with prolonged applause. The solo on the con- certina was extraordinarily good. The hornpipe dancing was perfection, besides, let me say, 1 have seldom seen a finer looking body of sea- men than the singing "Linnets. The Reverend Chairman very appropriately brought the pleasant evening to a close by expressing in his humorous way, the hearty thanks of the audience for a most agreeable evening's entertainment.
