pony I have been that would have caused the splendid racer Teen Kwang to really stretch himself and I am not sure that Mr. St. Andrew little wonder is not the best pony yet raced in China. Prejudicch as in Torpedo a dangerous comh- petitor, but for the "Champions" distance, în fine weather, I doubt if he is greatly his superior. I fancy Torpedo has not such mettle in him as the redoubtable Prejudice, however, nought but time can show. Ambassador, the Hongkong Derby winner, did

not answer expectations, and had to content himself with the Consola- tion States, which he won easily from a good field. This pony is a really high class racer, but he was not in the best condition, and his long stride is not suited to a muddy course, Mr. Paul was singularly unfortunate, only obtaining a single win throughout the meeting and that by the aid of his old and faithful re- presentative, the evergreen Tajmahal. How- ever, fortune favors the brave, and no doubt Mr. Paul's indomitable pluck and enterprise will bring his popular colours well to the fore here in The SHANGHAI STAXES, a forced entry of Tis. the fall of the year, and also in Hongkong next $ for all Pontes, except those catered in the Spring As details of the last day's racing are Roadsters' Plate; first Fony to retive seventy-appended, allusion to them here is scarcely neces five per cent.; second Pony, fifteen per cent.;ry: I may state however that our "Off Day" third Pony, ten per cent.; weight for inches as

been fixed for Saturday the 5th inst., when per scale. Once Round.

Mr. Reynell o Driving Cloud was backed at wens against the field." Tajmahol was kept in the rear until entering the straight the last time, where Mr. Bidwell let him out, and the old pony immediately placed the issue beyond doubt, eventually, win- ning in a canter. Time 4331,

SECOND DAY TUESDAY, MAY 16T, 1883. The weather was much better to-day although the course, notwithstanding the care which had. been bestowed on it, was still in very indifferent order. Andyetsome really good times were made. Dandola, despite his penalty, added the Chu- Ka-Za Cup to his yesterday's victory, but it was a very close thing between the spotted one and „Hcarpon,-and-it-almost-looked-as-if-Mr.-Bidwell- had been for once caught napping. The Derby resulted in a great surprise as it was looked upon as a real good thing for Pebble; how ever, the favorite was actually never in the hunt and Torpedo romped away from his field, eventually cantering in about ten lengths ahead of Belgravia in 3.18-very good time considering the sticky going. Mr. Reynell was the fortunate winner of the Ladies' Purse: on the greatly improved Oriole, the coveted trophy, a very beautiful work of art, being pre- sented to the successful jockey by Miss Blanche Pickwoad. That sterling racer Tajmahal, rid- den by Mr. Bidwell, won the Race Club Cup in 4338 under grest difficulties, the jockey, owing to the girths not having been tightened, riding the greater part of the journey with his feet out of the stirrup irons. Prejudice proved too much for Allegro and Jolly Friar in the Shanghai Stakes, this making his fourth victory in that important race. Mr. Arthur scored a win with Piccadilly in the Concordia Cup, and finished second with Pall Mall to Gracchus in the That- les Cup, Mr. Jot's dun winning the last named

by a couple of lengths. Peculator, ridden by is owner, deverly beat Second Violin and seven others in the Spring Cup, and the day's sport was brought to a conclusion by the easy victory of Northeek in the Roadsters Plate. Particulars are as follows —
