the adjoining churchyant. A question has arisen in England, who is to replace that lost nose for a new one? The face of "Queen Anne? is destroyed. Her Ma
jesty" is daily insulted by the public appearance of her mutilated statue. It would seem to be an casy matter to patch a new nose upon the face j or, for that matter, to contract for another and more acceptable piece of sculptural work. The matter was recently brought to the notice of the Common Council of London, but that "thrifty hotly considered that no authority ex- cept that of Parliament was efficient in the premises. The Dean of St. Paul's, too, says, that the monument was erected at public cost tinder,an act of Parliament, and therefore that the Chapter has no business to interfere in the matier. The Department of Works will not step in to the relief of the doubt, because it is especially forbidden to touch any statuary: within the city boundaries. The Treasury.
then fore, refuses all applications for money for the restoration. An effort has also been made to throw the great work upon the broad shoulders of thie Corporation, which, however, is determinedly turned against any endeavor to further burden it, being already over-bundened: And so the dis figured statue of Queen Anne, without a nose, re- mains a sepulchral biteousness in front of St. who look upon it, and no power in England can Paul's Cathedral, an object of abhorrence to all. be found to replace it, or to mend it so that it By an unanimous resolution the Dublin Cor- may, to an extent, be publicly presentable. Sir Joseph Pease's motion, which we have already given, and which claims for the Chinese Government the right to deal as an independent State with the opium traffic, will be 'secondel by Mr. Samuel Smith M.P. for Liverpool. Wednesday night commencing "The importance of the trade between this Colony and Northern Australia now existing and likely to arise &c., c.," is so misleading that I consider it a duty to the public to show up its inaccuracies, and the pretentious ignomice and check of the creature who penned it. The talented para-" graphist of the evening oracle has been at Port Darwin; he made this community acquainted with that fact immediately he arrived here but he forgot to mention that he was only in Port Darwin a sufficient length of time to enable him to brush his hat and wash his throat out with a cumshaw draught of water; although he presumes to speak with an air of authority on the vastness of the trade between Hongkong and that port,
The China Inland Mission, a society which' and how it is likely to be increased to the bene makes no appeal for subscriptions, has just re Does this well informed scribbler base his as.ceived a sum of £3,c as on anonymous contri- sertions on facts-supplied.by-shippers of goods.bution for its funds for missionary work in the from this Colony to that part of South Australia | interior of China. called Post Darwin? Certainly not. So far as regards personal knowledge of the shipping trade of this Colony with Port Darwin he can know literally nothing, just as much as he did of that Interesting game of "Grab-loo" he joined in on board the Eraine before he got so innocently taken in for a round of "drinks." The Chika Mailtells us that it has received a visit from one ofthe partners in a leading business establishment in l'ort Darwin. This is simply an exquiste joke to any one who has the slightest experience of that remote township. A lending business establish- ment in Shau ki-wan would not sound very mag- nificent, yet Shau-ki-wan is a much more im portant emporium in a trading sense than, Port Darwin can claim to be at the present time, or is likely to be for some considerable time to come. It is incorrect to say that freights are a third cheaper to Hongkong than to Australia, from London, as a reference to the London'commer- cial papers will show, and it is equally mislead- ing to state that English goods can be purchased cheaper here than in Melbourne or Sydney, Having resided and traded in the Australian Colonics for some years I am in a position to state that most things of English manufacture are 30 per cent. cheaper in Melbourne or Sydney tban in Hongkong, and I am sure there are many others in this Colony who have experience of Australia "who will bear out this statement. Will the China Mail paragraphist kindly state explicitly what are the particularly heavy duties levied on English goods entering the Australian ports! From the customs tariff issued by the leading Australian Colony, which is now in front of me, I can see nothing particularly heavy in the way of duties to make a song about. If the editor of the evening print would like to see the customs tanff list for New South Wales, you are nt liberty to hand him my card, and I shall be happy to give him some information on subjects with which, it is apparent to me, he is at present en. tirely unacquainted. In conclusion I would only advise this pretended authority on Australian commercial statistics and prospects to stick to the truth when next he lets loose on any kind of affairs pertaining to the southern hemisphere, as Australianematters are sufficiently well under stood by a large number of people resident here, to render the system of providing "padding" by writing the senseless rubbish which has lately hpeared anent that country in the China Mail profitless experiment. The present editor (e. hasher-up) of the evening Journal's short exper- fences in Australia, very clearly illustrate the truth of the old mying that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing,"
