A VISIT TO THE NEW FRENCH

STEAMER GOLCONDE”

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, MONDAY, APRIL 9, 1883.

Devonport on the 19th Jan. for the China Station, gunboat, Lieut. Commander Gamble, which left to relieve the Moorhen, arrived at Gibraltar on the 37th ult

The Sapphire, corvette, Captain Fullerton, made a six hours' trial of her machinery on the" 23rd uit in the Channel. The trial was very satisfactory, a speed of twelve and a quarter knots being realised. The Sapphire sailed hom Dev. onport on the 24th ult. for the China Station, Dia Madeira, St. Vincent, and the Cape of Good Hope. She goes out to relieve the Encounter.

On Saturday we braved the troubled sea in the The Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon died on the ur and at the invitation of Mr. Dodwell of a3rd ult, at the age of seventy-one. In recent Mel... Adamson, Bell & Co. the agents of the years he had suffered greatly from softening of the brain. The body was in state for three days Company, paid a visit to the new steamer Gol at St. Vincent's Church. The interment took conde, which has been recently built for the Nox-place on the 28th ult., princely honours being velle Compagnie Marseillaise to trade between bestowed upon the deceased Patriarch. Marseilles and China. Though the day, was not calculated to make one feel particularly anxious _to_climb_up_and_down companion ladders to

inspect the holds, engines, &c., of a vessel, yet | from the moment we stepped on board the new craft, we became so interested in all we saw that the unpleasant weather was quickly forgotten.

The Golconde is a screw steamer of over 3coo tons, built entirely of steel, and has cost about two million francs. She is most completely fitted out in every respect and no pains or expense have been spared to make herascomfortables ship as any employed in the trade. Her cabin accom- modation for 28 saloon, and 28 second class passengers will bear the palm for being the most comfortable and complete of any vessel in the harbour. Her tween decks are 8ft. 3in. high, and this is the height of all the cabins. The sleeping berths are large and exceedingly com- fortable and the arrangements for cooking &c.,

of the most modern description.

The crew are berthed in large rooms forward, and in such a satisfactory style that many of our occan going steamship owners would do well to imitate the arrangement of the forecastle of the Golconde. Immediately abaft the forecastle is the store room and wine room, both of which are large enough and sufficiently stocked for a modern hotel.

It is reported that Prince Jérôme Napoleon intends to take up his residence at Brussels, and that his sons, Princes Victor and Louis, will enter the Italian army. Before leaving France the Prince is going with his two sons for a short stay at Milan, there to meet the Princess Clotilde The greater part of the furniture and pictures

The Pilot schooner FP Knight, left for Newchwang on the 21st instant, but the New chwang Customs larcha, known in Shanghai, as the Relief, is under repairs and will be detained here nearly two months longer.

On Good Friday, the children from the schools of the Inland Mission and their teachers had a pic-nic at the West Beach.

On the 25th, the Newckwang lightship, en route from Shanghai to her station, anchored under Cheloo Bluff for shelter during a strong north-westerly breeze.

On Thursday, the Tautai visited the Chefoo Filanda where he was shown over the establish- ment by Mr. Aux, the General Manager; the Filanda is now working nearly to its full capacity and with its steam power and the most improved machinery, it should be able to give a good ac- count to its enterprising proprietors.

On Friday night and Saturday some rain fell, removed from the Prince's residence which will assist spring to throw her mantic over The appointment of brigadier general com.this district. Some consternation was created in the House'

of Commons on the 23rd ult. by the discovery of in the gallery with his hat on. The a stranger outrage remained unchecked for some time, the attendants being under the impression that he was a new member. When called to order the stranger explained that he saw gentlemen "down there" wearing their hats, and he thought the custom might be general.

Major-General Sweedland Mainwaring, late of the Madras Staff Corps, and formerly of the and Madras Native Infantry, died on the 15th ult., at Wiesbaden. The deceased entered the Army in 1839, and obtained a lieutenancy in 1843, in which year he served with the Expeditionary Force in China, and was present at the storming and capture of Chin-kiang-foo and the investment of Nanking He was promoted w'a captaincy in 1856, become major in 1861, lieutenant-colonel in 1865, colonel in 1870, and major-general in 1831.

The machinery for propelling this gigantic struc ture is a pair of compound surface condensing en- gincsof 1700indicated horse-power, capable of pro- pelling the ship 13 knots per hour, and the captain assured us that he could make the voyage direct to Marsailles from this port in ad days. There was one thing we observed which is worthy of notice, and that was that although all the steam winches-in-the-ship-were-at-work-there was no exhaust steam visible, as by a patent condenser on deck it is all utilised and after being condensed is pumped back into the boiler. We noticed also on the upper deck a row of valves which we The Bill to abolish actions for breach of promise were informed were for the purpose of extin of marriage has been issued among the Parlia guishing fire by filling any or all the compartmentary Papers, backed"" by Mr. Caine, Mr.

ments with steam,

Altogether we spent a pleasant and profitable couple of hours on the Golconde, and would re- commend a visit to her by anyone desirous of making

quick, comfortable, and economical voyage to Europe.

As the owners of the Golconde have boldly taken the lead in an entirely new direction regards the well-being of passengers, they deserve more than an ordinary share of support, and we heartily wish them every success in their laudable enterprise.

An interesting experiment in the way of con- tinuous railway travelling has just been made. A train consisting exclusively of Pullman carri- ages left Calals on the afternoon of the 23rd ult., and arrived at Rome on the evening of the 25th, the passengers having had no occasion to leave their seats or berths, except for the purpose of taking refreshment at certain pro-arranged stop- ping-places. This trip of 1,400 miles is the longest continuous journey on record for al though the distance from New York to San Fran- cisco is much more than twice as long, in all such expeditions in the United States passengers have to change cars several times, whereas, in this particular excursion, the same carriages per formed the through journcy ftoni Calais to Rome.

The Kong

Bang, a steel screw-steamer for the Scottish Onental Steamship Company, Limited, has been launched by Messrs. John Elder and Co., from their shipbuilding yard on the Clyde. She is of the following dimensions:-Length, 240 feet; breadth, 34 feet; depth, 34 feet (moulded); LANE, gross tonnage, about 1,400. The engines are of the usual compound inverted cylinder type; the high-pressure cylinder is 30 inches diameter, and the the low pressure 60 inches, the stroke being three feet. The steam is supplied from two single- ended steel bailers with three furnaces to cach, at a pressure of 110 lb. The vessel is classed in the highest grade of the Bureau Veritas, and, is fitted up for a few European and Chinese passengers, but is principally intended for the cargo trade. She is a sister vessel to the fong Kw, and will be commanded by Captain Jordan, late of the company's steamer Danube. She will leave the Clyde on the oth prox. for Singapore and Hong Kong. The Tai Chi, the third boat, will be launched on the 15th prox., and the Stam; the fourth one, carly in April. All the four boats are similar, and are built of steel.
