The above spots were commenced yesterday One of the most important counties to which teinoon on the Race Course. The weather thoáttention of Chinese emigrants has oflate been at first was a trifle son, but cleared up as the attracted, is that of Nouh Bounce. Favourably afternoon ware on and, baring a tendency to situated with regard to climate, possessing large THE Spanish Steamer sulti yness, was nearly elk that could be desired tracts of forest and fertile land, and within cary, for an athletic gathering or on alteroon's out-distance of Hongkong, Saigon, and Singapore, it ing. The attendance of spectators was fairly offers exceptional advantages to settlers. Gutta- large, but the fair sex were less numerously percha, rattan, camphor, beeswax, and bird-nests represented than they usually are... "at our muscular meetings. However, the "Grand Old Buffs" as that hardy veteran, General Sargent, calls them, can lay the flattering unction to their souls that what was wanting in quantity, so far as the fair sex were concerned, was made up in quality, Lady Bowen, the Misses Bowen, and Mrs. W. H. Marsh gracing the gathering with their presence. His Excellency Sir George Bowen, Commodore Cuming, Licut-Col Hobson, 'and many of the officers of the Gaulson were present and remained till the sports were concluded for the day. The Band of the Buffs, under the able leadership of bandmaster Quinn, played selections during the afternoon and added much to the enjoyment of the spectators The times given for some of the events, notably the quarter mile race, are exceedingly puding Green is credited with doing 50 4-5th seconds for the quarter mile, and in the mile only ran third, beaten by a long distance, the winner's time being smin. 24 1-5 seconds. The man who "clocked" the quarter mile race must have got alightly out of his reckoning as the time given is simply ridiculous. It may be news for the official time-keeper to learn that there are not six men in the world who corld do a quaiter in 50 4-5th seconds on the Wong-nei-chong race course in the month of Apil, and also that Mr. Green of the Buffs does not happen to be on of the men who can accomplish that wonderful performance. Some of the events were new troductions to the colony in the way of athletic int we hardly think the amateurs of Hongkong will ever introduce them into their annual sports, as splashing about in dit and mud is neither elegant.or pleasant. We append a report of the events and prize winners :-

"Golden opportunities are easily lost though so difficult to obtain” wrote one of the leading Chinese capitalists of Hongkong, after having visited the country: "the Chinese are fighting to obtain a footing in foreign lands, and now North Borneo is open to emigrants and trade and commerce invited. The Indigenous popula- tion is of a higher grade of intelligence than that of the neighbouring great islands, and the na tives have shown themselves willing to assist settlers in clearing the ground and rendering it arable. They have already helped to clear large tracts of timber in the interior, and are Content to work well at low prices: a fact which timber, as without their assistance the cost of will certainly tend to increase the exportation of felling and transport would more than counter- balance the profit Mines of several kinds of ores have been reported from the central dis tricts, and extensive coal-fields have been dis-Trent in this Colony weighing 7.1.7, in TO SHANGHAI. covered, but the Borneo Co. has wisely chosen to give its attention to the development of trade and the welfare of immigrants before attempting any mining, operations. that, in the case of the possible failure of their colonization schemes, the mineral products would probably make up for all other losses.

A strong protest was raised in the fall of last year by some influential Chinese against the en- forcement of Import and export duties. Up to September, an ad valorem duty of 5 per cent. was, payabic on all imported goods, while no less than to per cent was demanded on all exports. It was urged that such measures would be certain was still in a wild state, and grass had to be cut to check the influx of Chinese, for the country and trees felled in order to erect even the most temporary dwellings, only a very little was needed to discourage settlers, and if a duty of to" per cent was to be raised on the little they that immigrants would simply engage in mer might be able to expo, It was morally certain

Again, whereas, there s the greatest necessity for the felling of trees along the coast of Nothern Borneo in order to erect suitable habitations and assist in pay ing ground-tax, unexport duty of fo per cent, would render it quite impossible to realize profit on the timber, It must be said, to the credit of the Boraco Co., that immediate notice was taken by them of these complaints, backed as they were by the sound advice of Sir Walter Medhurst, a man who thoroughly understands Chinese human nature.
