After we went to press yesterday a great rush was made on the stock of the Hong- kong and Whampoa Dock Company re. sulting in an extensive cash business at 60 percent, premium, also in large time trans- actions at 63 for May and 64 for June. This morning as soon as the market opened 1. Docks became the subject of renewed in- quiries, and a lot of shares changed hands at 61 for cash, also on time at 62 for April. and 65 for June, When our report left there were buyers at all these rates. We are not in a position to give any reasonable explanation of this great re-action in favor of Docks; but it appears to us from pub- lished statistics that the present quotation under all circumstances, is a dangerously high one. Of course we do not presume to offer advice to share speculators, but merely give our opinion for whatever it 'may be worth. In this particular instance it may be worthless, still as the Scotch put It, facts are chiels that winna ding, an' daurna be disputes, and we certainly cannot see 65 per cent. premium in the Dock scrip with the present outlook. Fires are offered at 355, without securing purchasers. In Sugar stocks, Chinas have been bought and sold to a considerable extent at 203, leaving off very firm with buyers at that rate. Luzons have also been dealt in a 100 for cash and 112 for July 31st. There are, however, plenty shares on offer at the cash rate. Hotels remain very firm with buyers at quotation. Other stocks require na special reference.
