Firstly, then, we would whilst reviewing the figures in the statement of accounts refer to the You may remember that at this time two years ago allusion was made to the intention of the Court to gradually invest some 250,000, in Gov ernment Stocks. At the end of 1880, the sum appearing under this head in the accounts" amounted to about $135,000, whilst you will notice that this amount now figures for $630,000, thus the decision arrived at two years ago has been carried into effect. I have already alluded to the kems under the head of Bills Discounted and Receivable, and may now pass on the amount standing against Bank Premises. At this date. last year this amount stood at $175,000, and you now see the sum increased to $347,000; this is explained by the purchase of the St. John's Place property here as residences for your chief ard sub-managers, and a small residential property at Singapore, both of which came into the market, and were secured at a very moderate outlay.
At the half yearly meeting
in August last, 1 informed you that the Directors were con templating the rebuilding of the present Bank- ing Premises, and I am now able to tell you that plans and tenders have been re ceived and that the building will shortly be commenced. From the drawings and estimates which have been sent in the Directors have, after long and very careful consideration and consulta tion, selected one design which will in their opinion meet the wants of the institution for many years to come, and I may here mention that the total cost of the building will amount to some three lakhs of dollars. The outlay is of course a heavy one, but looking to the future and at the increasing business of the Bank we feel sure that the Shareholders will agree with us that the time had arrived for the carrying out of an undertaking which must, sooner or later, have become an absolute necessity,

To meet this expenditure for the erection of new premises, the building of which will extend over probably two and half years, the Directors hope to set aside from time to time, some portion of the profits so that when completed the amount at the debit of Bank Premises will not be much, if at all, in excess of the pre- scat sum. We have already commenced this provision by writing off, onder this head, on the 31st December last, the sum of 360,000, and your Directors have every confidence that their action herein will meet with your approval. Coming now, to the Profit and Loss account, the first mater for notice is the augmentation of the Reserve Fund by writing off to this account $150,000 out of the profits of the half year.

The following is the report of the Shameen
Municipal Council for the year 1882:
The Council's financial statement for the year 1882 has been printed and placed in the hands of the rate-payers; this shows a balance in hand of $4,203,98, besides two bonds of 100 each.
The largest item of expenditure is of course that appertaining to the police. The efficiency of a police force is best estimated by its negative resuits; hence, in the well sustained immunity from robberies and disorder, the Council think the residents of Shameen have reason to be well satisfied with the manner in which the settle ment is guarded by Superintendent Lindberg and the twelve Chinese policemen under his control The roads of the settlements are patrolled at all

MEETING OF THE HONGKONG FIRE INSURANCE COMPANY; LIMITED.
The report
The Chairman said-Gentlemen, the object of this meeting, as you are aware, is to pre- sent the report for the year 1882. --has been in your hands now for some time and I do not think there is any necessity for me to make any remarks on it. It is satisfactory to see that the premia is steadily on the increase. Losses have occurred in the course of the year; but if losses did not occur sometimes there would be no fire insurance companies. I hope, however, they won't be so heavy in future years. I think you will approve of the investments of the company's funds. They are in every way satisfactory, as I think you will see, and the directors have the greatest confidence in them. These investments now return a considerably larger amount than they did in previous years. I now propose that the report as presented and the accounts be received and adopted.
The estimates for the current year have to be decided on by the meeting of rate-payers to be held at the British Consulate on the 6th March : the outgoing Council can only suggest what they deem desirable. They estimate the ordinary expenditure as follows
