The annual Flower and Poultry Shows were continued this afternoon in the Public Gardens, Up to the time we left, but very few Europeans had put in an appearance, the visitors being mainly composed of Chinese of both sexes, and about half past two the children of the Basil Mis- sion School, headed by their master, trooped into the gardens, and were marched in double file round the Show several times. By four o'clock a large crowd of foreigners will no doubt have assembled to view the Show, as well as to listen to the inspiring strains of the Band of the Buffs, which arrived, just as we left, in charge of their able leader, Mr. H. Quinn. Returning from the Show, we met the children of the Berlin Foundling Hospital, in charge of their Mistress, en repte for the gardens to enjoy the sights and the music, the little ones' faces being radiant with joy at the anticipated treat.

SMALLPOX.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE "HONGKONG Telegraph." SIR-I have noticed for some time past a certain man walking about the colony, and resort, whose house is at present infected with visiting clubs, messes, and other places of public smallpox. This person has on this account been forbidden to enter within Her Majesty's Naval Yard for the past six weeks, yet it appears that he is allowed to carry what may prove a very without.check-or-hindrance. This is surely not: as it ought to be! Who are responsible for the prevention of what looks like spreading broad- cast an admittedly fearful disease?
