Cutty Sark, after galloping a mile very slowly, was sent over the steeplechase course, facing the obstacles with more confidence than on
previous occasions. Driving Cloud, after trotting once round, galloped considerably over two miles. The old chesnut went very slowly for his first mile (2.32) but Improved as he went on, and finished with great resolution on the far side of the course. Dutch Oven showed decided signs of lameness on going on the course, which, however, were not apparent when he galloped with his stable companion Kassassin for close on a mile and a half. I timed the first mile to be 2.22.

LONDON, January 14th.
In spite of the Immense sums which have been spent upon the new law courts, the bitterest complaints are being made en all sides regarding the accommodation they furnish, or rather do not furnish, for all classes doing business there The building, it was known from the plans adopted, would be dark, and when the court chambers were fitted up everybody saw that their arrangement left much to be desired. The Judges cannot hear, so far removed are they from the lawyers and witnesses; the jurors are almost blown out of their seats by currents of chill air; the barristers have no desks for their papers, and the public cannot obtain admittance to the building at all, for two doors labelled "Public Entrance" are always locked. Every body is really turned away from the main en- trance. Not only are the passages inside dark, but they are more tortuous than the maze at Hampton Court Everybody regrets the de- parture from the old courts at Westminster, in- convenient as they undoubtedly were. Until great alterations are made, the costly palace of justice must rank as another of our great archi- tectural failures. Cynical people say the only satisfactory thing about the whole business is the fact that the architect is dead and the con tractors have gone into insolvency. Westmins ter Hall is to be entirely cleared of the law courts before Parliament meets next month, thus res toring the hall to its original state. The work of demolition has already begun, and it will not Occupy much time, as the courts were little bets ter than mere sheds put up against the main building.
