BANIAN" AND MR. F. HAZELAND. ÁS TUR EDITOR OF THE "HongKong Telegraph,"
The gallanthero of the notorious "bucket" er, the clever "Banian," has struck out into line, and has tackled athletics. As his edge of athletics is about equal to his know. Kogy of many other matters with which he has ingertinently meddled for some considerable Back, much to the disgust of all right g persons in this Colony, he has not only shown himself to be an ass of the first water. but has also very conclusively shown himself to be a mean stabber in the dark. As I am somewhat interested in athletics, and should! like to see justice done to all, I write this letter in defence of a gentleman to whom "Banian" refers in his latest hash" in a manner which, had my name been mentioned instead of Mr. Hazeland's, would have probably impelled me to pay the mud-headed Editor of the Daily Press a ceremonious visit. Ifthat distinguished member of the press (in idiocy?) had refused to fumish me with the name of the low-bred scoundrel who imputed "such mean and ungentlemanly motives to myself, I should have felt strongly inclined to wreak sum mary vengeance on his carcase by soundly kicking him in his own sanctum. Here is what the gentleman wrote, and I ask your opinion: if be, does not openly accuse Mr. Hazeland of working the oracle for himself to the extent of nobbling the Ladies' Purse at the coming

LONDON, January 26th. M. Giers is being greally feted in Vienna.
I was not present at the raceting convened to arrange for the coming Athletic Sports, but if I had, I am sure I could not have been more amused than I was upon reading the Daily Press repost of the occasion, in which I see that "it was de cided, after some discussion, to adopt a sg tion of Mr. Hazeland to the effect that the Ladies' Purse should be made the prize for the ico yards race. Now, considering that the gentleman named was the winner of that race Last year, and stands at the moment practically without an opponent for the same event this rivals even the proverbial cucumber in coolness But the joke does not end here. In previous the winner of the 100 yards has been penalised two yards; equally, on former occasions the quarter mile' being for the Governor's Cup has always been open. The sapient conclave which met the other day has reversed this ar rangement. I have no hesitati out yes that arrangement is carried these two events will be utterly devoid of that first essence in sporting matters-fairness, His Excellency and the Ladies have the issue in their own hands.
Now, Sir, in the first place it is a gross untrutt to state that Mr. Hazeland made the suggestion above referred to, and the Daily Prist was much to blame for making the statement, and more so far repeating it under the heading of "Chit-Chat." Before "Banian" made out. Mr. Hazeland to be the schemer for the Ladies' Purse, the equal of the proverbial cucumber for coolness, and the manipulator of the "sapient conclave" to the extent of making the teo yards and 440

"Banian alludes to that first essence in sporting matters-fairness, but does he consider it fair that Mr. Hazeland should be penalized for one scot free" and again do d for winning, while the quarter mile an easy-tat of pot-hunting? I do not think that Banian's idea of fairness will be supported by many, and it does seem somewhat strange that the two races in which Mr. G. A. Caldwell is most interested should receive the special atten- tion of "Banian," whilst other maiters, which really could have stood a little writing about, were left untouched. Is there any connection between "Banian" and Mr. G. A. Caldwell? why should the "bucket" hero only champion the interests of the Central School am much inclined to the opinion that the dishonorable and shabby motives imputed by "Danian" to Mr. Hareland would fit himself much better than the gentleman for whom they were intended.
