SPORTING GOSSIP.
The racecourse was again thrown open this morning, and as it had been carefully watered and was in good going order, a great deal of galloping took place. There was, as is usual on "powing mornings, a large attendance of specta tors, and much interest was evinced in the pro- ceedings ca: the track. The Derby favorite Hornpipe, ridden by his trainer, was the first pony to show on the course. This powerful grey galloped about two miles very steadily, going in exceptionally good form. The last mile and a half was covered in a shade under 3.34, the pony going well within himself at the finish, a performance of suficient merit to justify Horn.
THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 1883,
Bothwell and Cutty Sark went steadily 'for a mile and a quarter in 3 minutes 13 seconds. The times for the last mile were 38, 77, 1.56, and 2.32. Little Warlock going alone covered six furlongs in 1.38). In a mile and a quarter "pow" between Triumph and Esperance, the dark grey, with much the best of the weights, won very easily-time for last quarter, 36 seconds.

Dauntless strode along for a mile, first half 28 seconds, full distance-2.36, the pony going rather gingerly when pulling up on the hard ground at the turn out of the straight. One of the best performances of the morning was a mile gallop by Merry Monk and Dales man, in which the dun had best of the griffin at the finish time 2.14 The Shanghai St. Leger winner, White Knight, had a steady gallop by himself; his time for the last six furlongs was 1.50, and his style was rather disappointing, not to say suggestive of a screw being loose somewhere. Japan is honestly desirous of preserving peace, but she naturally feels that to remain unarmed in the presence of such a capricious clement of disturbance as Chinese jealousy, would be to invite aggres sion. It is hard that her resolute efforts to restore her currency and develop her resources should be interrupted by a fit of pique, on the part of her big neighbour; but this, perhaps, is one of the contingencies she had to expect when she elected to become the representative of Western civilization in the Orient. Chinn, awaking to the consciousness that she has been left behind in the race, is apparently bent on giving the world some practical proof that the "THE strength of inertia is not her only claim to con- sideration. Under the circumstances, some curiosity was felt as to the probable action of the United States' THE Company's Steamship Government, by whom a Minister to Siam had recently been appointed and who might there- fore be expected to take steps, directly or in- directly, with the view of determining the exact nature of the relations existing between the courts at Peking and Bangkok.
