Commercial.

THIS DAY.

Noon. The only feature on the Stock Exchange worthy of special reference is the depres- sion of Banks. This stock is now freely offered rum. New Issue at 183 per cent. premium for the end of the month, and 186 for March 31st, without leading to business. There is, however, an inquiry for a few shares for March at 185. We have heard several reasons advanced for this rather. unexpected depreciation of Bank stock, the proximity of the Chinese New Year and a reported tightness of money in the Shanghai market being the most probable. So far as we can gather from those who are likely to be well in- formed the present depression can only prove of a temporary character. Docks are wanted at 52 per cent. premium for the end of the present month; but there are no shares offering on these terms, Luzons ́are weak, with "sellers at 113. A small business in the bonds of the Chinese Im- perial Loan of 1881 has been put through this morning at 24 per cent, premium,

4 o'clock p.m.

Since last writing a fair business has been done in Banks at 185 for March, and a further demand exists for the scrip at that rate. For cash there are sellers at 182 China Sugars have slightly depre- ciated, a number of shares being now on the market at 200. Other quotations re- main unaltered.
