*Ir. Achung, a' boatman, admitted stealing a piece of wood, valued at 25 cents, and was fined L10-with the option of three months' hard labor. Prisoner went into retirement. From 78 up to date Ip Achung has been pretty well before the public, his record being rather warm. In February 1878 he was convicted of being found on board a piratical junk, and was bound over to
appear at any time during the following three months. In September of the same year he was treated to six months' hard labor for larceny from the person. In October 1879 he was again in trouble, for larceny, and got a month. In January 1830 for stealing a spar he was again relegated to the "select establishment" for half a year, and in the following January Mr. Ng Choy gave him a couple of weeks for collaring a piece of wood. On February 4th the Hon. Ng Choy and Mr. Tennochy served out Ip Achung with two years hard labor for earring snatching. Hay ward's establishment evidently has no terrom for this enterprising boatman, and we certainly are of opinion that his present spell of confine ment should indeed be accompanied by labor of the "hardest" description.

It is only fair to state that the course (not the training track) has been wafered for the last three days, and this with the top dressing has rendered the top of the ground apparently fairly good going. However, this is somewhat delusive, as under the alight layer of top dressing, where the water has had no ap. preciable effect, the soil is hard and unyielding, thus causing a heavy jaron the forelegs of ponies fully extended. FRENCH-PRESERVES,
John Kelly, one of the participants in the fa- mous "cowboy duel," arrived here yesterday. He is a remarkable man. Born in Buffalo about and became pretty well known as "Kid Frank." After leading an adventurous life he married a well-to-do Mexican woman, and by her secured the San Pedro River, close to the line. He be a fine ranch forty miles square in old Mexico, on, came known far and wide by his skill in shoot- ing, and was generally avoided by men desirous of killing some one for the sake of notoriety. His when he found his brand on 3,000 head of cattle, berd grew rapidly until about four months ago, worth nearly $102,000. He determined to sell 2,500 head, and gathering up 1,500 head more, he started to drive to Denver, a distance of nearly 1,500 miles. His outfit consisted of thirty-two cowboys, and Frank took command of the ex- pedition. The trip was a long and severe one, but by using great care the losses were a slow march across the burning plains and small. The party started on May 23rd, and made trackless wastes of Arizona and New Mexico, A until September 8th found them fifty miles north of Trinidad and an equal distance east of Cucharas. The Kelly outfit went into camp for day near the camp of George Howard, a large. cattle grower. cattle and commanded twenty-eight cowboys. The two herds became mixed up while travelling close together; and Howard made a claim for cattle, which Kelly considered unjust, and xa- fused it. This angered Howard, and words followed. Kelly claimed Howard had some of his cattle, and offered to exchange; but the latter refused, and the quarrel became very dangerous.. began to handle their weapons in a manner The cowboys on each side gathered around and

Kelly saw the danger, should occur between such deadly markamer there would hardly be a man left to tell the tale, and in addition to the loss of human life, the huge herds of cattle would be scattered and all of War was hands ruined. just as the cloud about to burst he conceived a plan to avoid bloodshed, and broached it to Howard, who agreed to it. The plan was as follows: Each outfits, and placing them in line, fifty yards distant on horseback, to give the word "Fire 1" let them settle the dispute. This novel' method of
settling a difference was hailed with delight by the men on each side, and volunteers were numerous." Kelly selected six men who desparate situation. had been with him a long time, and been tried Howard selected six of his best men. There was no time lost in preparing for the duel, which was to be the greatest affair of the kind ever known. The men of the opposing sides retired to their camp and coolly made preparations for the feast of death. They groomed their horses, oiled and cleaned their revolvers, and putting their anddles Kid on with care, rode out to the fight" Frank's men were armed with Winchester re volvera, 38 and 44 calibre, long barreled, and Howard's six carried Colt's improved. Each man knew, his weapon and his horse, and all INTERNATIONAL were fully aware of the fact that the men stand ing so grimly in front of them were equally wells equipped
The opposing duelists were drawn up fa line facing each other at three o'clock in the after- noon. The sight was one which few men have IMPORTERS OF EUROPEAN of the hair.
