Docks are again on the lownward line, holders offering to sell at $3 per cent. premium. without succeeding in obtaining customers. On the other hand, Steamboats have greatly improyed thelf; position, as after sales at 31 per share premium for cash, the supply at that rate became exhausted, and a further rise appears probable.

The German steamship Massalia reports left Hamburg on the 30th August, and Singapore on the ith instant. Had fine weather for 'some days: after which bad rain and heavy squalls with a stiff N.E. monsoon.

SOLDIERS' AND SAILORS' LETTERS.
Privates in H.M. Army or Navy." Non- commissioned, Oflicers, Bandmasters, Army Schoolmasters (not Superintending or First Class) Writers or Schoolmistresses may send half-ounce letters to the United Kingdom by mail at the rate of four cents (two-pence) each, which may be prepaid either in Imperial or in Hongkong Stampa. By private steamer. the postage is two cents (oac penny).

4-The letters must not exceed half an ounce. No handkerchiefs, jewellery, &c, can be sent, even with the ends open.
and If from a Soldier or Sailor his class description must be stated in full on the letter, the cover of which must be signed by the Com manding Officer, with name of regiment, ship, say in full. If to a Soldier or Sallor, his class and description, with name of regiment, ship, &c., must be stated in full.
Soldiers and Sailers have no privileges with regard to books or papers, nor can these be prepaid with Imperial Stamps...
LETTER BOXES, BD, Many boxes of letters are received at the Post Office not sealed, that is to say, the box is fastened with scaling wax, but there is no impression of a zent.
The attention of boxholders is called to the necessity of carefully sealing such boxes with. stume recognisable scal, and of sending a chit- book or receipt with them. The omission of the
latter precaution leaves a doubt as to whether the contents of the box ever reached the Post Office: the omission of the former, as to whether. part of them might not have been abstracted for the sake of the Postage Stamps.
