SINGAPORE, October 6th, 1882. A very destructive fire broke out on the even- ing of Wednesday last at the well known en- gineering establishment of Messrs. Howarth, Erskine, & Co., River Valley Road, which com pletely destroyed the major portion of the build- ings, and damaged the best part of the extensive machinery. Mr. Madden, one of the employés was rather severely burned almost at the outset of the conflagration; and Mr. Anderson, the junior partner of the firm received some injury by being strick on the chest with a fire hook. Perhaps Bandmann--who according to his sworn statement in your Supreme Court, was applauded for about ten minutes when he appear. ed as Hamlet at Drury Lane after the Rousby affair-may recollect, when it is brought to his. memory, the cabbages and rotten eggs he had thrown at him at the Broadway Theatre, New York in 1868, when he tittered the memorable words from England's greatest author Vali | (WITH POSSESSION ON 18T OF OCTOBER NEXT) it vast de ghost von mein vader." (Vide New York Herald, May 26th, 1868). I will send you up this paper, so that you can be prepared for Daniel if he ever comes to judgment; but

fancy he will hardly venture into the Far East again, Singapore is too hot for him; l'enang wouldn't have him at all, and, Hongkong and China are a perfect inferno for him. The co closed article on "Bandmann's Bad Temper" taken from the home paper Society, should open the eyes of Daniel's Hongkong sympathisers as to the man's real character.

Hudson's Surprise Party pleased and amused our community for about a week; and we now have the "Tourists" who are performing to good houses. Mr. D'Orsay Ogden and his troupe are also here and on dir that they will amalgamate

i with the Tourists Professor Rudolphe, the "great cucist and ballist" arrived recently, and I notice his posters stuck up throughout the town. This artiste is "a champion billiardist."

The Municipality here got a severe rub from the Puisne Judge, Mr. Ford, during the hearing of an action recently raised against them. by Major Patterson on account of the damaged con- Commander Sir Baldwin Wake Walker, Bart, dition of their roads, bridges, &c. e steamship Whampoa whose launch we ted in our fast issue, is a handsome steamer of 1730 tons groas register, having compound en- gines of 200 nominal horse power. She has been Constructed to the order of Messrs. John Swire and Sons, of London, and is to be employed on the China Coast. She possesses all the modern improvements, both as regards hull and ma- chinery. Her boilers are fitted with Fox's patent corrugated fucs,

We have just karned in Singapore of the justice-loving spirit of the Hongkong community anent the recent libel suit. The only regret here is that another $1,000 were not mised to pursue and punish Bandmann for the gross manner in which he perjured himself in the witness box.
