The principal feature, which strikes an unprofessional eye is surveying the vessel is the small diameter of the paddie wheels, which would suggest a lack of speed when compared with such steamers as the Kinkiang and fchang; but on closer inspection we find that the im- mense breadth and depth of the floats and the increased number of revolutions more than com- pensate for the smaller diameter of the wheels. The principal dimensions of the Honam are as follows:-Length between perpendiculars ayo fect; breadth of hull 38 feet 1 inch; extrenie hold 13 feet 1 inch. The under deck tonnage is breadth across paddle boxes 73 feet; depth of 930 04/100; between decks she measures 857 23/100; the upper deck 560 31/100; and lawer 16 07/100, making a total of 2,363 65/100. The tonnage allowance for engine and boiler space is 874 55/100 and for crew spaces 111 8/100, which deducted from the gross tonnage leaves a nett register tonnage of 1,377 92/100. The con tract speed on an feet draft is 151 knots. She is supplied with 3 compasses which were adjusted by Messrs. Whyte & Co, of Glasgow. The steam steering gear is placed in front of the boiler room on the lower deck, and is worked by a small- wheel, in the wheel house. the hurricane deck. There is also an arrangement for steering by hand in the event of the steam gear becoining disabled. Mr. P. A, da Costa, the Secretary of the Com pany was received with loud applause, and said -Gentlemen it is not in my power to follow Mr. Sharp in his long and very eloquent dissertation on the history of the steam engine, the advantages of steam communication, the cheapness of Chi- nese labour, and the other questions which he has so ably alluded to. Mr. Sharp having kindly associated my name with those of the directors," beg to return thanks for the kindness with which the toast has been proposed and received. Mr. Sharp very properly ascnbed to the directors the success of the Company and praised their good policy in bringing about the arrangement with the opposition Certainly to the directors is due the credit. The names of Richard Deacon, Adolph André, William Keswick, as well as those of the present directors, Mr. Belilios, Mr. Reiners, Mr. Melver and Mr. Johnson, are identified with the history of this Steamboat Com- pany. As for my humble self, I have been only acting as the steersman, putting the helin to port or starboard as directed. I trust lave done my duty, but I deserve no special credit. While conveying to Mr. Sharp the thanks of the directors and expressing my own for the kind sentiments be has expressed towards us, beg leave to express the hope that the time is near when steamboats bearing the flag of our company shall traverse the inner, waters of this river. Considering that while we allowed to ascend the Pearl River only as far as the City of Canton the Yangtze-kiang is tra versed to the extent of hundreds of miles, I have no doubt, gentlemen, you will not think me too This floating palace is propelled by gigantic sanguine in my expectation of the expansion of beam engines on the compound surface conden our field of enterprise. During the trip Mr. Brewer also took several diagrams from the engines with two. of Richard's patent indicators. These dia- grams which we carefully inspected, showed the actual developed power of the engine, and when calculated proved that the high pressure engine gave 1237 horse power, and the low pressure engine 1303, making a total of 2540. The pres. sure at which these diagrams were taken was 72lbs, and the number of revolutions at the time were 317 to 32.
