TRIAL TRIP OF THE STEAM

CHONAMA

The Steamboat Company's new steamer Ha nam made her trial trip on Saturday last, the journey chosen being a trip to Canton and back. We stated a week or two ago that the Directors would have exercised a wise discretion had they decided to run the trip to Macio instead of to Canton, and the result has proved that our view

was in the main correct. In the first place, since her arrival in Hongkong, after an exceedingly stormy passage from Glasgow, the Honam's capabilities have not in any satisfactory-way been put to the test. No doubt her engineers took good care to have the whole of the engine

for granted that the officers in charge of the steamer did all that was possible to department in thorough order, and we take it

have her in good trim for a trial trip. But as Captain T. Benning only joined the ship on Friday last, and as she was undoubtedly very badly trimmed, besides having her steering gear in most unsatisfactory condition for river traffic, it is useless to deny that the Honam left the Canton wharf on Saturday morning heavily handicapped for the difficult task which had been set her. And the half of her difficulties were not ascertained until it was found that in- stead of being able to make the trip on slack "water, she had a current running from two to three knots an hour to contend ngainst. How ever, in the face of all these difficulties, we are strongly of opinion that the Honam fully evid enced of what metal she is made, and. we shall, after a few minor... alterations have been made, expect her to, exceed even the most sanguine anticipations.

TO CANTON AND BACK IN THE » HONAM".

When we arrived at the wharf at 7.30 on Satur. day morning, we found the Honam gaily decked with bunting from stem to stem, and somewhere about one hundred passengers on board-share- holders and others--who had accepted the invit-- ation of the Directors. We have not space to give the names of all the celebrities who were present, but in addition to the Directors of the Company, amongst the others we noticed Major Hamilton (representing His Excellency the Ad ministrator) Commodore Caming, Captain' Deane, Mr. H. E. Wodehouse, and quite a host of local notabilities. Punctually to time the Honnin left the wharf, and at 7.35 was fairly en route, to Canton.
