Commander Hugh Cuthbert Dudley Ryder, who has been promoted for services at Alexandria, as a cadet was appointed to the Calcutta for dis posal, and was sent out to China, where he served during the war (medal). He commanded the Vigilant, despatch vessel, on the China station, from September, 1874, to 1877, under the flagship of bis kinsman, Admiral 'Ryder.
Colonel W. E. Marsland, half-pay, late- 5th Dragoon Guards, who has been selected to com- mand the remount depot at Cyprus, served with the 1st Dragoon Guards during the China War of 1860, being engaged at Sinho at the fall of the Taky forts, and in the actions of the 18th and 21st Sept. He also took part in the advance on Peking (medal with two clasps).

On Saturday 1500 Egyptian troops' from the Salahych garrison, with a Krupp battery, at tempted to outflank the British at Kassaroin, but after a stubborn contest, in which they fought with great bravery, they were routed. A green standard was captured by the British, whose total casualties amounted to 64.
Thirteen thousand Egyptians with 12 guns attacked the British force yesterday near Tele! Kehir. After a sharp engagement they were repulsed and retired to their own lines, many pri- soners having been taken by the British.
The Kiritish advanced to within range of the enemy's fire at Telel Kebir, and withdrew in the afternoon.

Certain Arthur Cecil Cunis, R.N., who has bepected to succeed the late Captain Step. hens un conumand of the Thetis in the Pacific Squadron, has been in the Navy since 1848.
