The Standard of August 9th says:---The 'mo- duration of the Government amendments to the Arrears of Rent bill practically relieves the ten- “sion of the political situation.
The News says:--The firmness and sound Judgment of Gladstone has apparently saved the country from a serious constitutional crisis.
The Times anys: Gladstone's speech ought to render the loss of the bill and a consequent crisis impossible.
In the House of Lords on the roth ultimo, Lord Carlingford, Lord Privy Scal; moved the adop tion of the amendments of the Commons to the House of Lords amendment to the Arrears bill.
The Marquis of Salisbury said the object of his amendment to the bill was to provide against injury to landlords who had solvent tenants. He believed, he said, the bill was a public blunder, and that it would not be a final measure. The bill, without the provision requiring the assent of the landlord, would be most pernicious and an act of simple robbery. The Peers, he added, who assisted in passing his amendment, consi dered it not advisable to reject the bill. He therefore would not challenge a division. Lord Salisbury also added that the Conservative Peers meeting at his residence to-day decided, by an overwhelming majority, that in view of the state of affairs in Ireland and Egypt it was not expe- dient to reject the Arrears bill. He said that he was not of that opinion, but found. himself in a minority.
All of the re-amendments of the Commons to the Arrears of Rent bill were then agreed to, af *ter the Earl of Limerick and the Marquis of Wa-
terford, had recorded protests,
The Chief Secretary for Ireland stated in the Commons that when the Arrears of Rent bill be comes law, the Government will take into con- sideration the proposal of the Canadian Govern ment to grant lands to Irish families.
