We understand that in September an Autumn Meeling of the newly formed Athletic Club will be held on the new grounds adjoining the Cricket pund. We are pleased to state that under the superintendence of Mr. Burgoyne, the indefatiga ble secretary, the lawn tennis ground is in per fect order, and the course generally for training has been issued inviting the marine engineers generally to become members of the Athletic Association, as the attempt-a very laudable one to form an independent club, not from want of funds, but the desire to obtain a piece of ground suitable for athletic purposes-has failed. The engineers of Shanghai are a fac body, and the present.idea of amalgamating with the existing club will be hailed with satisfaction-Courier.
SHANGHAÏ TURF NOTES.
August 29th.
The rain interfered a great deal with the fun this morning. It spite, however, of the state of the ground, some owners galloped their poules. The only ones waith notice are Black Thom, who was bouraling, along past the Stand in won- derful-style, and two griffins, one-belonging to Mr. Aviys, the other to Mr. Edmund, which were powed together for a quarter, Mr. Axlys's pony winning by about a length. If the time I heard mentioned, viz., 315 seconds, is anywhere near the truth, the performance is very good for both ponies, but I am inclined to doubt the correct. ness of the tinie.
:
The 200 net brown, belonging to Mr. Henry, is undoubteilly a fine looking animal, perhaps a little narrow in the chest, but it remains to be proved if this is a vital defect,
Some of the time-keepers have been growling that no posts are up. However, at this stage of the training, watches are practically of little use, except for amusement. Of course the posts will all be up on the 1st of September, and I am in- formed the grass course will be opened, if the weather permits.
After all the growling that has taken place hiring the last month, I have come to the cor- clusion that there is really not much to complain of; the only objection which I see is, that we have no place to train on during rainy weather; but against this, we have the advantage that the training course much more rapidly recovers its condition after rain, than formerly, The Coffee Room Hoy, says the number of ponics now in training is 147-
The Bucketing Society's Pretty Frames raced with Sweet Briar, and the future water-cart griffin, for about five furlongs. Sweet Briar came in first declares that he had Preity Frames easy. The rider of the intter pony, however, maintains that he could have licked Sweet Briar's lend off," but that he did not want to show the pony off too much before the Society had him in all the books" The water cart pony appeared to think that a slow pace was more in his line.
The Course was honoured by the first appear ance of Mr. Siwel (who is temporarily in charge of the great Hongkong stable), mounted on aa awfully bobbery pony; but with some difficulty and a great display of horsemanship he managed to keep his scht; and we shall no doubt see him to the fore at the coming meeting-Courier,

August 19th, 1882.
A heart the following from a Chinese gunboat officer, who has just returned from Secul with Admiral Ting:
.
The regular training season opened this morn ing and there was a very good attendance at the ratis. The grass course was open; it was rather heavy going and was a good deal cut up by the work done, on it. The course was unusually crowded with ponics for the first of September and everything looks well for good race incet ing. Advantage, was taken of the grass course to give the ponies a short gallop there were some half miles done, and the excitement usual in the early part of the season went on about quarters. The most interesting feature of this morning was the sight of Mr. King's six selected griffins, which arrived by the Eldorado nearly a fortnight ago; their owner has been up north and selected them himself; he returned only yesterday andexpectation was on the quivize the owner and griffins turned out; the griffins are fine animais
As is known there are two parties in Corca, and moved in grand style; he selected a fine dun for one of his mounts; a spotted pony cc the Foreign and anti-Foreign; the former led by panied him. They must have been well trict, the King and his wife; the latter by the King's and no doubt Mr. Ring's stable is very formid father who daily gained more infinence, his policy able; he has also Repeater and Orien in it, the being based on the old tradition, which was to latter looks very well; it will be remembered he keep out all foreigners, be they Chinese or others; did remarkably well in his trials, but was kept the late intrigues by China and Japan, each aver, no doubt to keep out of the way of Monte preaching against the other, increased his in- zuna in the griffin races. Then there is Rialio,
on the 3rd ultimo; first, the attack on the who will do well for the long races. Mr. Paul'suence rapidly so that an insurrection burst out Tajmahal, Sirocco and Hualachan and the twe kept over griffins were on the course; Rose was apanese Legation; next, that on the King, who is imprisoned, his wife was strangled; and pre- up the read. Red Robin and Dunkeld were out fects, who allowed the Japanese Minister to both going well and looking lusty. Mr. Bill is escape, beheaded; the families of the students, in great force; he has a crowd of griffins, about 17
who were sent here to the Powderworks to study or 18; some of them keptóver; there is the skewbald Dissonance; his old ponies are Gang Forward and Second Violin. Mr. Ten Brocck has enough under his charge to carry a race meeting through ; First Cornet going well, and looking as sound as a bell; Wild Dash looking ns if he would go in his best form; Azalea, who, his trainer says, has le Bucketing Society's Pretty Frames-cli two-legs, but we thinks-is-his-mainstays there is, cited a certain amount of chaff; and I am glad Wild Eckly looking very well and a lot of griffins; to see that the Society have evidently modified they went for all sorts of galloping Earl Harold, or Wild Fang, seems past his day. Mr. Henty their views, on the subject of galloping, The, only danger now is, that they will go to the other has acquired Dictator, White Knight, Tootoo and. 2 extreme in training, and consequently, on race Felhani and a griffin called Montezuma No. days their ponies will be so deficient in wind Montezuma himself was up the road. a sprain or something. Paiheen has been going rather dickily. Mr. Seraph has his two old paper hunters in training and took liberal odds against them for the St. Leger. The Ewo stable were all cut trotting; there were seven griffins: Jolly Friar, Merry Monk, Wild Huntsman, Driving Cloud, Bandsmann and Kinsman-dfercury,

August 30th. Although the weather this morning was not of the most agreeable character, there was a very fair attendance at the Grand Stand.
For the last few days Foxhound has again returned to training, looking very well, but going "very curio General opinion appears to centre in the idea that Pothren and Foxhound will run a dead hent for a "screw's" race. I am not in accord with public opinion.
I have not mentioned hitherto that Mr. Henry an exceedingly fine-looking light bay, which hve not yet seen galloped. He is a pony worthy of attention.
After a few days' absence from the Course, on urgent private affairs, the, winner of the Jockey Cap at the last meeting made his appearance, mounted upon an exceedingly handsome dun griffin, which is, probably, the subject of great expectations.
August 31st,
What might have been a very serious accident happened this morning at the Grand Stand., Mr. Risk, while holding a pony for his mafea to mount, was waltzed off the grass plot on to the stones, when the pony attempted to emulate the performances of the Eaust Family; the owner, being an involuntary participant in the gymnastic evolutions which thereupon eventuated. Their first proceeding was to loot the property of two young students who were capsized in pass ing through the bridge of boats on their way to Hangchow to pass their examination. They next hustled a man into the river from the same bridge, for not being able to meet a debt, and afterwards regretted drowning their victim, as by this means they rendered it impossible to obtain anything in the future. Already the engines of the law are at work, and have gained a clue to the offen. ders in both cases, and when they are brought up the severest punishment will be administered.

It appears there is an annual pilgrimage to this place in which a great number of women participate. One of the pilgrims, an elderly Nigpo woman, accidently fell front the first high bridge leading to the temple, and was dashed to pieces on the rocks beneath; at once a runiour was spread abroad that the priests had caused the woman's death, and the mob carried the body back to the temple.
