side, yet nothing is done. Will not some.pro. The preliminary arrangements were in every way from the SECOND MORTGAGEE to Sell by minent member of the Club get up a requisition admirable, the competitors themselves having the to the Committee strongly recommending that arranging of the umpiring, judging and, scoring, For the past three weeks the above contest has the bath be fenced in on the Northern as well as on the other sides! I am sure that all the mem-

caused a good deal of excitement amongst those bers of the Recreation Club who use the bath

in this Colony who are handly with the ville, some of the cracks backing themselves at a short price w pull off the premier write, and at evens that

house regularly woul! sign such a requisition, and the Committee could hardly refuse to carry aut the wishes of the majority of members.

At present the bath is generally unfit to be used by persons of cleanly habits, owing to the dead animals, filth from the drains al boat population, &c., constantly floating about. This garbage collects in large quantities at the steps, and castern and western sides of the bath, and is simply disgusting to see. In this hot weather a man leaves his office at five o'clock, unul goes down to the bath house to enjoy a refreshing swim. He strips and prepares to plunge from the steps, when the sight of the accumulated filth actually turns him sick, and sends him into the harbour for his recreation, or over to fungham Bay. I have lately heard members say what is the use of paying $10 a year for the privilege of using the bath house, when, as a matter of fact, the place is not fit to be used, and I certainly agree with them, that it is moncy uselessly expended, as very few persons would care to subscribe merely for the gymnasium.

I really cannot see why the absurd, and self opinionated ideas of one man, or of a body of non-swimmers, should be permitted to exist to

they would be in the first three. A selling sweep was also arranged by that popular sport William Porter, who is, however, much mure widely as Billy Moore, the known and respected, various shootists attending at the drawing of the sweep, and bidding up for themselves, and any others whom them they considered dan- gerous, with a vigour that very plaindy showed that all the spirit of speculation is not confined to those roosters who came to grief over the burst up houses and land specs." Investors at the sweeps, with two exceptions, were a long way out of their reckoning, most of the fancy-priced ones being dead of the centres of the targets, much to their own, and their adherents surprise. The "field" went for a low figure and was secured by a sport" who has no reason to regret his purchase, the"feld "being the first prize winner of the sweep, the second and third prizes in the sweep being secured by Mr. Glass, himself pulling off the second, and a judicious purchase landing 1 him the third. A well knownWest End "sport" who made no secret of his chance being a'warm one, did some wonderful execution with the rifle, his

The suggestion of a correspondent in your paper a week or two back, that moveable bamboo billet amongst the rafters of the.bang of the most artistic designs, Engraver on Stamps, francs-which could be removed in the event of stormy weather--should be provided in order to keep out the filth from the bath, was a very ex- cellent one, and ought to have been adripted be. fore this. Why there is so much delay in removing this great grievance the members of thic club, who test nightly at the bath house, cannot understand, and so I hope some cuve member of the committee will take the matter up, and see that something is quickly done.

I would also suggest that the high diving stage be removed. It is seldoni used excepting at the aquatic sports, when it could easily be put up again, and I am sure that if we had a typhoon it would aid in the destruction of the whole place.

general arrangements of the Recreation Club are in every other respect so praiseworthy, that it is the more surprising the nuisance. I have called attention to should be permitted to exist.

We cannot think the sport in question displayed his true form last night, and can only come to the conclusion that Professor Barney-was being manipulated in the hope of getting on a soft match, or that the shootist had worked his passage through a bottle of square tonic, tom- monly called a Dutch Consul, before coming on the range. At eight o'clock some six and twenty marksmen faced the foe, we mean the targets, and when the last veteran completed his tiring, it was found that Captain Henderson was top scorer with the respectable total of twenty-four, being one from the highest possible, whilst Mr. Class, and a modest gent--who does not wish his naue to appear in print--tied for second and third prizes with twenty-three points each. On firing off the tie the engineer kept up his steady shoot- ing, and again scored twenty-three, the modest one being one print behind. The prizes were then presented to the winners, a little bit of jam being administered to the dark horse who pulled off the premier prize and who had only entered his
