COMMUNICATIONS to home papers from Sfax, Tunis, and Kairouan announce that large con- tingents of Turkish troops having deserted, the regular army have left Tripoli, crossed the frontier, and bivouacked on Tunisian territory to join Ali Ben Kalifa. They are furnished with Martini ics. The Paris Foreign Office is much exercised with regard to the issue of tieneral Logerot's ex- pedition against the insurgents. It has instructed the General not to cross the Tripolitan frontier, to which he has replied by asking the Govern ment where the frontier is. The insurgents have attacked and defeated, near Sfax, the Swassivi tribe, which has made submission to the French, It is believed that Ali Ben Halifa has declined the amnesty which has been offered him. The movement of the French columns against the rchels in Southern Tunis has commenced.

REFERRING to the American "Suspects" im- prisoned in Ireland, a Reuter's telegram from Washington dated April 6th, says :-Diplomatic correspondence between England and the United States, communicated to the Senate yesterday, shows that President Arthur earnestly and re- peatedly requested that all imprisoned Americans should be brought to trial. Several telegrams passed between London and Washington during the recent negotiations, the contents of which the State Department does not think it would be pro- per to disclose.at present. Mr. Lowell wrote re- garding O'Connor that he believer that that per son courted arrest with the hope of adding to the difficulties of England. O'Connor expressed to Mr. Lowell his helief that war between England and the United States was desirable. The des- patches also show that Mr. Lowell questioned O'Connor's expression that he meant to return to America when his health permitted. The des patch of the 4th inst, announcing that five Ameri- cans were still uprisoned was erroneous, the

"RATTLE his bones over the stones, he's only a pauper that nobody owns." This quotation, ub- serves a contemporary, must have occurred to the minds of some of the members of Lambeth Vestry the ather evening, when Mr. Hubbard fold a moving tale of sorrow. He informed the meet- ing that some few days ago an okl man, eighty- one years of age, living at Brixton, met his death by falling down some steps, and his wife obtained an order för a parish coffin. On taking the order In the undertaker, his wife told her that she could have a name plate, on by paying 45, or 5s, but being very poor, she was unable to decide then. The coffin was shortly afterwaris taken home, and the body having been previously measured, was found to be too large for it. The body was, however, forced into it and screwed down, in order to get the legs in. The coffin afterwanis burst, and liquid matter ran down the stairs. This shocking narrative we are glad to find stirred the members to a sense of their duty, and in the end a searching inquiring into the whole case was ordered. The day has happily gone past when dead paupers can be treated like dead logs.

OSCAR WILDE IN AMERICA.

The apostle of the beautiful will likely meet with something in his travels which he will like even less than the ocean. The great American paragraphers have got hold of him, and this is how they deal with him :—

Summary of Wilde's lecture-"A thing of beauty is a toy for ever."

The first step towards the worship of the beau- tiful is to sit at the feet of a draped hean-pole.

"What on earth's get into the man," exclaimed Mrs. Vanderstewpan, as she saw her fiege lord approaching with his hair all every which way and holding a very large cabbage in front of his sinciling

apparatus. Preserve us all, Mr. Van. derstewpan, have you lost your senses?" "No, madan, sh'all a nishtake, ishyouthatsalunatic d'yesheethishlily; welltha'sh'thessence of buty : ishtroolybu'ful,

The secret ofer according to Wilde, is

to be found in art. But there is another secret upon which this poetical young man did not touch -it is contentment and good humour. Which, let us ask, presents the truest ideal of human bap- piness. Mr. Ruskin or the Cheereble Hirothers?

A young lady, having seen and listened to the ethereally muscular Oscar Wilde last evening, inscribed in her diary the following impressions, which will doubtless be shared by many sensible ladies who were present:-"We no longer seek for the meaning of the 'unkissed kisses' of which Oscar writes. Judging from our own feelings that style of osculation is the only kind he is ever likely to experience in this utterly too too planetary sphere.

Oscar Wilde has arrived. A healthy sylph
