As the martyr, Polinto, Signor Vanzelti sur- passed all previous efforts. The tenor music is exceedingly trying and difficult, and taxed the Signer's powers to the utmost; however he came through with flying colors, whilst his acting was powerful and impressive. Signor Vanzetti splendidly made

and his performance richly merited the enthusiastic applause which it received from a delighted audience. Signora Lubicci's Paolina was a most meritorious representation, the character being admirably suited to the printa donna's style, both her singing and acting reach- ing a high standard of excellence. The Severo of Signor Ciocci gave the accomplished baritone another opportunity of distinguishing himself, of which he availed himself to the most. He looked the Roman Pro-Consul to the manner born, and never acted better. His grand voice greater advantage. Signor Corti as Callister, and Signor Patierno as Felice rendered good service, and we are glad to be able to say a good word for Signor ninet ti who gave a capital

representation of Marco, singing with more power and in much better Laste than he had ever previously displayed. The less said about the chorusses and supers," the better. However the entire performance praved genuine success, and apparently gave the large audience great satisfaction. The whole of the artistes were repeatedly applauded, and called before the curtain at the end of each act.

We would remind the public that the last per- formance of the season will be given to-morrow night, when "Saffo" will be reproduced for the benefit of Signora Lubieci

The ship is laminated throughout by the Swan system of electric light, and everything which the inventor and best engineering skill could devise to ensure its perfect working, has been done with the most satisfactory result. The fight is exceedingly soft and light, and at the same time perfectly stendy and free from flicker- ing. The engine which supplies the motive power is something of a novelty. It is really a com-. bination of three engines in one; and it is this combination which makes the light so stealy and uniform throughout the vessel. The gentleman in charge of the good things of this life added in no small measure to the general success, and deserves every praise for his untiring efforts to make things "Arz." The large, assemblage examined the magnificent steamer from stem to steni, and were no doubt rather astonished at the extraordinary complete ness of everything they saw. After passing a most enjoyable evening, the company began to thin about midnight, and by half-past twelve the last thirsty seul was seen to be taking his departure ander the impression, from the brilliancy of the light on the gangway ladder, dat the sun was up and it was high time for him to be going home. We have made a minute inspection of the Ceptic, and must say that, in all our expe. tience, and we have been on board not a few crack steamers, we never inspected a vessel so' perfectly complete in every detail as the steamer in question. For the benefit of these benighted mortals who have not yet interviewed this grand specimen of naval architecture, we append a alight description of her, which, though falling far short of doing her full justice, may entice a few of those in search of knowledge, and the to pay her a visit; should anyone take beautiful, our hint and do so, we are sure that a courteous reception will be accorded them.

It is the flower of a plant belonging to the so- lanacea order, and indigenous to Northern Aus tralia-a sort of stunted shrub, from three to four blossoms of a waxy texture, white in colour and inches in height when fall grown, and bearing flecked with pink spots. These flowers are picked in the month of August, dried, packed tightly in canvas bags, and then subiccted to a high degree of pressure, which imparts to them the consistence of cake tobacco. By chewing a small plug of this substance relief is speedily obtained from bodily fatigue, hunger and thirst. A larger dose of "pitchery-bidgery" produces absolute insen sibility to pain, but does not subject the patient to any of the inconveniences resulting from treat-ant's Work undertaker. In common with rate, and perfect accuracy guaranteed. the parenties hitherte familiar to the faculty, pitchery-bidgery, administered in minute doses, acts as a stimulant-in larger quantities, as n powerful sedative. But it is stated to possess the peculiar property of enabling those who take it habitually to withstand fatigue and undergo great physical exertion upon n low diet. Like the famous hathish of Monte Christo, it is said to be an effective and agreeable substitute for food and drink. Considering, remarks the Tele-

The steamer Coptic was builtin Belfast by the well-known firm of Messrs. Harland and Wolff, for the famous White Star Line. Her general acteristics of the well-known vessels of the line; appearance embraces all the symmetrical char- long graceful yacht-like hull, with ample beam, masts, ship-rigged in three, and the fourth, in default of a better definition, appropriately named the "jigger," These provide effective saft in the event of any breakdown of the power, izachinery, fully equal to that of a first-class sailing ship. Like her larger sisters, the Britannic and. Germanic, she has turtle backs, both for- ward and aft, to relieve the ship of the rolling seas which would otherwise inundate the decks. These also form an excellent shelter in wet and stormy weather to the steerage passengers.

The captain's cabin is immediately adjacent to the wheel-house and bridge, so that he is, practi- cally

speaking, always at the post of duty. The officers quaners are in the deck house on the apper deck forwanl, close to and convenient to their work, and quite apart from passengers, so that there is nothing to interfere with their need ful rest of the efficient execution of their respon- sible duties.

The steerage Accommodation is in three sec-graph, the present cost of good butcher's meat tions, approached, by separate entrances, and provided with separate lavatories, with an ample water supply kept in constant circulation by a pulsometer pump. The single men are all quar tered in the main and lower deck forward, and between them and the married people there is the saloon accommodation and engine space. The single women are still further aft, and have their quarters entirely to themselves, and as they are in charge of experienced matrons and a fully qualified surgeon, they are tho roughly well cared for in every respect. A hospital replete with every requirement is pro- vided for each section, and two on deck for in- fectious cases. The steerage berths are of canvas, and by an ingeniously simple arrangement can,
