of

The evening print gives this as emanating from the pen an Army Surgeon, Dr. Mackinnon, who, I am prepared to lay a wager of $50 to a ten-center, never wrote anything of the kind, It is but another instance of the barefaced misre presentations of the China Mail upon every subject which it ventures to handle, at, perhaps, I should say, pollute; and without meaning o insinuate that the morals of the Hongkong Gar- risons are or have been a whit worse than those of the general community and they make but a poor show, is all conscience-f cannot silmit that they are so ravessively good as to call for a special inquiry by the House of Commons into the subject.

We hear from Tientsin that it is there rumour- ed that Cam. Schaufekk has been appointed from America to go Corea to make a treaty, and that he will be backed by Chinese influence. An American vessel of war will probably sake him over, but nothing positive is yet known.

We hear that there is very hate chance of Mr. Fairaffer putting in an appearance at the races, as the previous jinricksha monopolists have issued a mandate to the effect that he is to be shot at the carliest opportunity. We understand that he has already been boycotted in bis office, and it is necessary that proceedings should be taken by the Municipal Council investigate

the matter.

Scene-Venice. Ferind-The 17th century. Other Special Attractions on this occasion, which will be shortly announced.

Hongkong, May 181, 1882.

Yesterday we announced the trial trip of the new despatch gun-vessel built at the Kid gaan Arsenal. Although the representatives of the press were not allowed on the vessel, we understand that on going down the river, as far as the l'oint, she attained a speed of 11 krats. From a Chinese point of view this may be considered satisfactory, but it is not good enough to cope THEATRE with such boats as the l'igilant and others of her class,

We have to record a fatal accident by drown ing, which occurred yesterday. It appears that at about eleven am, a youth named J. W. Looms, belonging to the German schooner Nyighan, while engaged in painting the outer portion of the ship, fell into the water, and before he could be rescued, although prompt measures were used, he was drowned, and up to four o'clock this afternoon the holy had not been

recovered.

A Private letter from Peking states that it is repented that Liu Jen Fen the present Intendant of Shanghai has been promoted to the post of Provincial Treasurer of Hoaan, a position said to be of high importance and very lucrative. This is an additional promotion to the one we noticed last week when we stated that the "Thotai of Shanghai has been promated to be a judge of the frovince of Kiansi, a preferment which is regarded by the official classes as carrying more

mour than emolument."

Yesterday aftemoon, between six and seven o'clock, a fire broke out in the store of Yuct Sung, in the Honan Roul. The fire was caused by an explosion of gas, through the carelessness of a Chinese servant, who, finding an escape of gas, proxluced a lighted candle, which naturally caused an explosion. Being hear to the Central Station, assistance was soon at hand, and with | STALLS-For 3 Persons, 6 Nights the help of some foreigners, who were passing at STALLS-Fort Person, & Nights the time, the fire was got under before any serious damage

was done. Mr. George Polite rendered effective assistance, and so did Detective Mack, but both received considerable damage to their wearing apparel in endeavouring to extinguish the dames. We are glad to recognise the action of the above named gentlemen, inasmuch as the spread of a fire in the Houan Road would be of a most disastrous kind.

Recently, the Shen Pas office completel, as our morning contemporary observed a few days since, a beautifully printed edition of the P, wen-ruengfu. A thousand copies were turned out and the impression was unc admired. The type was so fine that a magnifying glass had to be employed in deciphering it. "The work was much sought after by the Chinese on account of the miniature typography. A Can tonese gentleman noticing the run the books. had has brought up the publication at a very low price, and has already made $10,000 on the speculation, for the Chinese eagerly run afer and purchase copies of this novel edition. The same speculator, we understand, intends to make arrangements with a well known firm to reprint some of the most popular works in the same style, and he expects to reap large profits by the venture. The Japanese have, we learn, rivalled this novelty in typography, for they hav printed a number of the classical works from electrotype. It is stated that there is a proba. bility of this style of printing becoming quite the rage with the better educated Chinese, and in consequence arrangements will be entered into by the samne enterprising Cantonese, to re- print in litle some of the classics which are inost frequently read by the general public.

PUBLIC AUCTION VALUABLE PROPERTY IN WELLINGTON STREET,

THE Undersigned has received instructions in Wellington Street, on

to sell by Public Auction on the Premises

The trial trip of a new addition to the Crincse navy took place this morning. The vessel under notice, which is named the Churn-he (great har mony) was launched from the Kiangran Arsenal the 9th day of May 1882, at Two O'CLOCK in

in October last, and the fitting out of the vessel

TUESDAY,

has occupied the interval. She was specially PIECE or PARCEL of GROUND situated in

built for a despatch boat, and powerful engines have been put into her for the purposes for which she is intended. Our notice must be necessarily brief, as although we received an invitation for. the trial trip, and took the trouble to reach the Arsenal before seven this morning, at the last moment an order was issued by Li, the manager at the Arsenal, forbidding any foreigners, except- ing the officials in the establishment to be on board. However, we can publish what we did see. The vessel is apparently a very strong-built ship, and armed with ave guna. The two on either side are brass guns, cast at the Arsenal some years since, and appear to be of a very primitive type. The fifth gun, is a 40-pounder Armstrong, and is to be used as a bowchaser.
