FIRST DAY.

Our first spring Race Meeting was inaugurated on the New Course this afternoon under very favorable cipetinstances. The course was in capital order, contrasting most favorably with our last meeting whell the various races were contested in a sea of mind, the ponies being, in some portions of the track, over their fetlocks. Proceedings commenced with the Spring Cup, a half mile spin which, after a pretty race, was won somewhat cleverly by our premier jockey on Revenge, late Wild Foam. The Amoy stable showed to the fore in the Chaaste Cup, that

IMPORTANT PROCEEDINGS. The adjourned inquest into the circumstances connected with the death of the seaman John Berry, who was found dead hanging by the neck in his cell in Victoria Gaol on the morning of Sunday last, was resumed yesterday before the Coroner, Mr. II. E. Wodehouse; and a jury com posed of Messrs. E. C. Ray, M. Prehn, and G. Prosch.
