know best.-Ed, Telegraph) the greatest soldier of the age proved quite equal to the occasion, and at once abandoned the project. He changed the stern of the boat for the back of a anule, and safely cred into the sunny plains of Raly. Like Napoleon un Mont Hanc, when I arrived at the Cricket Ground yesterday afternoon and found a chaotic state of affairs which no fellow could understand, far less describe, 1 rose to the situation and declined attempting impassibilities. The centre of the ground, sup posed to be confined to the officials, was crowded with spectators who joined in the various races with great glee and much enthusiasm. In the contests coined to infants, a avmber of avers gown infants played the most ponent parts. The exciting Stiggle between a bevy of fair maidens, aged six years and under, was cont pletely spoiled by the paters of what Mr. Biggg-Hin jeste, M. P. world call the "young hopefuls," ruining | in front of, and alongside the children, and ge erally mixing up the affair; and in most other competitions the same nuisance was conspicuous, The managing comittee, if such a body had any existence, was evidently out of its element. A young gentlenian, who was supposed to be the hunorary secretary of the meeting, showed a great deal of energy during the afteroon, but it was aced. If he could have been per- спетру suaded to lay aside his dearly beloved walking. cane for a few manuents, and instruct the police to clear the centre of the grond of all intraders, whose presence simply produced chaos, it would have been much more to the purpose the frantically ashing about muddling up matters generally. This gentleman was not the enly sinner; the whade of his colleagues were equally incapable. In fact, had it not been for the experienced assistance of Mr. H. J. H. Tripą, and one or two others, the sports would live degenerated into a confused medley.

I will not attempt to criticise either the com- petitors or the competitions. Grimble, Arther, and Braga won most of the prizes, as they ought | to have dong, considering that they are half as big again as the other boys.. The tug of way, which took about an hour to get up, owing to the confused inanagement, was chiefly noticeable for the large number of big babies who tried to show themselves off before the spectators, by caching the respective teams. One well known figure, the athlete who made such an exhibition of himself in the international tug of war at the recent civilian sports, was As usual, painfully conspicuous, and he was not the only offender against good taste. The prizes were presented to the successful fors by Mrs. Marsh, who added a fer

•of

dis-

kindly encouragement to the juvenile winners as she handed them their trophies. There was a good deal of delay before presenting the prizes, owing to one of the energetic officials having appeared with the prize list. With His Excel- lency the Administrator, Mrs. Marsh, and all the ladies and gentlemen in the Cirand stand standing Inoking at each other, and the committee of management running here, there, and everywhere in search of the missing prize list, your special war correspondent thought it high line "to make tracks," and did. The various events, with the winners' names, and other official particulars will be found appended :-

Our own particular tout observes: some of the animals engaged in this classic event were out for exercise this morning. The Crab and Tortoise went a short spin in company, the last named conceding a slight amount of weight. The interest inthisuialwagmarred by the Crab bolting off the course, and we should in the actual race advise his owner to ride him with a martingale. The Duck was not out this morning, having caught a slight cough owing to the draughtiness of his stable. The Pig was sent some strong exercise gallops,

The attention of boxholders is called to the necessity of carefully sealing such boxes with some recognisable scal, and of sending a chit- book or recript with them. The omission of the latter precaution leaves a doubt as whether the contents of the box ever reached the Post [132 Office: the omission of the former, as to whether part of them might not have been abstracted for the sake of the Postage Stamps.
