THIS DAY, FOUR PM.

Since we last wrote not a single tran- saction in buying or selling shares has come under our notice. We stated yes- terday that stocks had slightly depreciated all round without any apparent cause, and we have to chronicle a still further depre- clation in most of our local stocks. Banks are very much weaker, a large quantity of shares being on offer at 116 per cent. premium, and we think that even alowerrate would not lead to any extensive investment at present. China Fires are also far less firm than was the case yester- day, offers to sell at 292 per share meeting with no response; Sugars are also on the downward line, for although we have not heard of any shares being offered

LETTER BOXES.

Many boxes of letters are received at the Post Office not seated, that is to say, the box is fastened with sealing wax, but there is no impression of a scal.

The attention of boxholders is called to the necessity of carefully scaling such boxes with some recognisable seal, and of sending a chit- book or receipt with them. The omission of the

latter precaution leaves à doubt as to whether the contents of the box ever reached the Post Office: the omission of the former, as to whether. part of them might not have been abstracted for the sake of the Postage Stamps.
