THE ICEBERG FLEET. Latest advices from Newfoundland record the appearance off St. Johns, at the end of October, of the vanguard iceberg of the huge Arotio armada now sailing southwards along the consts of Labrador and Newfoundland." No less than 23 huge masses of glacial drift ice are reported to have been seen during October off the northern shores of the island, slowly but surely drifting south- wurils across the track of vessels plying between Europe and America. The first berg sighted off St. Johns was es- timated to be not less than a quarter of a taile in length and 800ft. în height As 2ft. of ice are under Oubore water.

AMOY RACES.
(FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.)
{BY TELEGRAFIL.Į
Amoy, 10th January, 1882, Favoured with fine weather, the sport on the second day provol most enjoy- able. The attendance in the Stand was quite up to the average, and the whole of the races were close and ex-
citing. The first event on the card was the Banker's Plate, a half mile scurry, which ou previous running looked a good thing for Iroquois, and so it proved, as the gray bearer of the "blue and silver" won cloverly at the finish. In the match between Cure. belium (late Wirreanda) and Sweep, owners up, batting was greatly in favour of Dr. Maun's mount, his victory in the Hack Stakes yesterday appear. ing to place the issue at his mercy

water for every one above, the total height of this huge mass have been 900ft. Its form was that of a vast platonu rising not more than a fow feet from the surface of the sea, and ex- teading about 200 feet from the southern side, with a high range of ice peaks 0 suddenly rising out of the plain. The rate at which this huge mass of ico drifted to the southward against a head wind was estimated at 2 miles per hour. Commanders of vessels crossing the Atlantic will need to keep a good look-out for these invaders from the Arctic regions. The powerful electric head-lights borne by most of the large passenger steamers will ronder good service in enabling their presence to be detected.-Colonies and India.

howoror, Mr. Pasis more finished batter than the Doctor, and scrambled first past the chair after a semblance of a struggle from the distance. Old Etoile du Nord stayed the two milos, better than the griffins in the Rajah's Cap, life victory being rather a surprise to the knowing ones. The Foochow win- ner, Reverse (late Stormlight), was most fancied for the mile aud & half Bund Cup, and he realised anticipations in the most baudsome inauner. Last year's winner of the Champions, Wild Fouin, was pulled out for the Coast Cup, and showed his liking for the Amoy course by scoring another victory. The field for the To Man-Chin Oup, for beaten griffins, was brought down to very narrow limits by the successes of Forager and Thermometer, so that Privatder had an easy task set him, which he had no difficulty in acoom. plishing. Cruiser again démonstrated bis staying qualities, by currying his 7iba. penalty successfully in tho Ledger Cup, and he will most likely be sent down again to Hongkong, as he bas certainly made great improvement on Jast season's form.. wanted at the rate, but holders refuse to come to terms, and we should imagine that an increased rate will have to be offered ba-
fore any business is transacted. Chinese In surances have been in demand at 280 per shara er. div., and a good many shares changed hands both yesterday afternoon and this morning at that price. Dooka are quiet but firm, with buyers at 40 per cent. pre- mium. On time a fairly large amount of business has been booked at 49 for the end of Maroh, and we should say from presont ap- pearances that the buyers will have all the bost of the transactions. The Company has excellent prospects of a good half year, and the opposition has not developed itsolf quite so quickly as was at one time anticipated, although we hear that the arrangements of the Chinese promotera are proceeding most entisfactorily. Sugars are rapidly rising in public favor, the last sales which we have to Toport, having been negotiated at 167), and at this rate the stock is steady. Other quo tations remain unchanged.
