London, 19th October,-A fire broke out on board, one of the Canard line of steamers whilst on her passage from New York to Liverpool. She was not far from the English coast when the fire was first noticed. Her captain made for Flint, the nearest sen-. port, situated in North Wales. It was found that the fire could not be subdu ed by ordinary means, and the vessel was accordingly scuttled.
The Transvaal Volksraad has not yet determined whether or not it will accept the convention made with Great Britain under which the country be came a republic. As, however, the
convention must either be ratified or
rejected by the end of the present month, and as the British Government has indicated its determination to ad- here to the terms of the convention, signs are becoming apparent on the part of the Volksraad that it will yield, and it is, now believed that the agreement will be ratified.
Mr. Gladstone is suffering from slight indisposition, occasioned by a cold.
