Poor Rout left his wife and children unprovided for. His wages were shortened by the work of the heathen Chines, and his life was shortened by the same party's filth. His unfortun- ate family would thankfully receive anything except an Amateur Theatri- cal Benefit.

He was the son of a clergyman, and the accepted of an heiress, whose pa- rents were of the severely moral type. While taking out his handkerchief in the presence of the parents, he pulled out a pack of cards and an old racing book. But be bad been to Sunday school, and quickly exclaimed: "Why, there, I've put on my father's cont." There's trouble in the church in conso. quence, and the parson will either have to resign or the son loss the heiress. Moral: When going coarting in a serious family, leave your prayer book and your sporting moms. at home.
