THIS DAY, ONE P.M.
A fair amount of Stock Exchange business "has béon transnoted since we list wrote..
Banks are in much better demand, and at improved rates, a fair number of shares hay- ing changed hands at 111 per cent. premium for cash and the end of the month. There are still buyers at that figure, but holders decline to sell although willing to do business at 112. Wo are prepared for a good deal of sec-saw business in Banke bofora the end of the year. Docks have been sold in small lots at 30 per cent. premium, but they are still on offer at that price. Hotols have at last made a move, a good number of shares having found purchasers at 104. They are hoyover still on offer at the same figure, without leading to further business. Sugars have also been made the medium of good business, and this stock remaina yery firm at 160 per share. Thore will no doubt bo a good deal of busi- ncas to report immediately after the monthly settlements have been arranged.

We do not cousilor that to be " soul" the Daily News is the only morning paper in the North of China and an official organ; we do not there- fore affect to believe that nobody sees or reals it. It is unfortunate that the in- formation we comment upon is nearly always incorrect. To enablo our readers to judge of the offensive personality contained in the word "parial-papor;" wo may point out that "pariah" means, "one of the most degraded of the im- pure classes of the Hindus.. They live apart from the other inla- bitants, who hold thom in great ab. horrence and subject then to the mean- est and most degrading drudgery." We do not know what sense there is in a metaphor like that? It is like most of this Brahman's motaphors. Does the want of casto refer to the papers, or to the men on them? If to the latter, we are glad to think that Mr. F. H. Balfour considers himself to be of a different caste to us; we dare say that he thinks he is personally vastly our superior-quito a Brahinan, in fact. A Brahman is a priest and of the highest casto of the Hindoos. Other people have not such a bigh opinion of him; aul we think it was very foolish of him to reprint the correspondence published in the Courier, which was very pungent,, since Mr. Balfour hus secured a larger circulation for the
