TO THE EDITOR OF TUR “HONGKONG TELEGRAPH."
Malgré tout, Monsieur la Redacteur, we still have men who have served our country's cause with zeal, determina- tion, and rare ability for many years, and who are unquestionably eligible for, and deserving of, the highest honours we can give them. Why should their claims be overlooked? You will perhaps, Sir, afford me the opportunity of suggesting names which strangely enough appear to be forgot ten and neglected, as a means of awakening the slumbering spirits of my compatriots to their true interests, and of paying homage to your goodness for endeavouring, as a result of your recent short visit to the cooling breozes of our sunny home, to rouse them from their inaction, and for raising your voice in the cause of a people who were apparently ignorant of, or perhaps had forgotten, their own oxistence.

SIR,-You will permit a native of Macau to gratefully thank you for the kind and generous motives which prompted you to devote so much of your valuable space to our affairs. The excellent articles which appeared in your paper on the 7th and 14th instant have already done good and gained you the respect and goodwill of all true lovers of their native home. I crave the further liberty, Mr. Editor, to be permitted to offer a few woll inten led observations, in order to de- monstrate clearly to all those who take an interest in the subject, the benumb. ed state of this effete community; the existence of a torpid condition at an important epoch in the history of the province, which is all the more sur- prising when one looks back a few years and compares the apathy of to- day with the glowing enthusiasm and Amaral, son of the gallant warrior excitement which at the election of who paid for his loyalty to Macao with 1874 actually raised such a powerful his life at the Porta do Ceres on that opposition against the Government, eventful day, August 2207, 1810, has that a man-of-war was placed in readi. surely some claims for rosoguition ness, with the intention of deporting to Like his sire, Senhor Amaral is an Timor, as political exiles, every sabal-officer of the nury, and he is well torn in His Majesty's service who known in the colony, whore, it is said. dared to rebel against the tyrannic reverence for his father's memory first pressure brought to bear upon the brought him.
