connection with the suit, the result, and extraordinary verdict of the jury have however ceased to be a nine days wonder, excepting to those in- timately associated with the case. Everybody knows what took place before the hearing of the action; we now propose to let a little light in on what has transpired since a verdict for the plaintiff was entered. A few days after the trial Messrs. Deliveries in Town and Harbour from Stephons and Holmes, the eminently respectable firm of solicitors who re- presented the valuable interests of the deeply injured Wicking, for warded as through our legal adviser a most formidable looking document styled, in legal phrase, Plaintiff's costs of suit. We have a penchant for giving publicity to documents and communications of every de- scription likely to interest or amuse our readers, and as this production of Messrs. Stephens and Holmes is unique in its startling originality,

We had been advised that costs in the Summary Jurisdiction Court were regulated in accordance with a fixed scale. That we believe is the invariable rule. Our surprise there- fore on surveying the puzzling mass of figures which the busy pens of Messrs. Stephens and Holmes had set out in battle array, reaching a grand total of $941.10 can be better imagined than described. We care- fully went over the elaborate details of what to us was a new experience, and after a hasty glance at the figures were forced to the comclusion that Messrs. Stephens and Holmes might possibly be very excellent lawyers, but that it was a positive certainty they were not accurate accountants. There was only a mistake of $200 ia the addition. That of course was a mere trifle, so we proceeded with our investigation.

Lord Bacon, the title by which he is generally known, was the author of a series of works of extraordinary merit, his literary and scientific labors being conspicuous by the light of a powerful intellect which, it is said, towered above that of all other men. Lord Bacon's writings embra- ced all kinds of subjects, from juris- prudence-which, we read, he treated not as a mere lawyer, but as legislator and philosopher-to mora- lity and medicine. In one of his famous works, his Lordship made use of a phrase which has justly be come a prized maxim in English literature. Speaking of the law, Lord Bacon said, "I wish that every man knew as much law as would enable him to keep out of it." Any person who has had the slight- est connection with English law, and English lawyers will justly appreciate the words of wisdom contained in the above pithy sentence. We speak feelingly on the subject, from recent personal experience.

All these are only trifling errors, 2.09 and may easily enough be attributed to carelessness; but errors, trifling or otherwise, should not appear in a document of this character. Mr. T. C. Hayllar would have had a good time of it, if Messrs. Stephens and Holmes could have had their way. On August 6th there appears an item "Paid $25," but it does not specify to whom it was paid, nor for what. We presume it was a fee to the 2.00learned counsel. On August 11th 1.90 Mr. Hayllar is credited with "Brief fee $200;" on the 12th with $50; on the 22nd $25; and as on the 1.00 26th and 27th he would appear to' have been greatly troubled with thirst, he is set down for $100 each 2.00 day as a "refresher." We leave our 200 readers to study the above interest- 2009ing document in its various aspects, literary curiosity of a kind which we strongly advise them to steer clear of at all hazards. A large number of suits came on for hearing before Mr. Justice Russell in Summary Jurisdiction yesterday, but none of them were of any general im- portance. Mr. McBroen, whose name has been before the public somewhat fre quently of late, was defendant in two suits, and in each case had a verdict given against him. Mrs. Snelling, a lady not altogether unknown in the colony, objected to paying Mr. Tam Aaung the sumof $10, cost of a screen supplied, on the ground that the screen was not made according to order, and the judge therefore allowed the case to lie over until Friday, so that an independent professional opinion could be obtained
