THE GREAT END.
Somo little excitement and amuse- ment has beca recently causod in scion- tific circles by tho predictions or pro- phecies of a certain Mr. Avetino, who Jas formally announced that this wick- ed world will cease to exist on ho 15th November next. We have not heard that any very extensive propara- tions are being made by the different nations of the earth to be ready for the Tatal day; howover, as Mr. Ave. tiuo's prophecy is identical to that uttere by the wise dou some hundred
and filly years ago, and has at least the merit of being ingonions we traus late his arguments and calculations from the Comercio, leaving our readers to form their own opinions on the
matter.
The following is the text of the pro phocy which is written in French :-
Sanglants aurore boreale aux poles; le soleil s'obscurcirá pendant tout un jour et cont lunes ensemble l'on verrà se com- baltre, ce que ne pourra jamais expliquer auenn astrologue du monde.-Aol.
To comprehend the calculations it must be understood that the letters of the alphadret are numbored as under:--

1881 !!!
This is a comfortablo kind of pro- phecy for one to think about for the next two months. As the Commercio observes, the prophecy being writton
in French, the great spectacle may only be soon by our volatile neighbours.
Nous verrons I
The following is an old salt's esti- mate of the piano:-A captain, who was asked by his wife to look at some pinos while he was in the city, with a View to buying her one, wrote home to hor: I saw one that I thought would suit you-black walnut hull, strong bulkheads, strengthened fore and aft with iron frame, sealed with white wood and maple. Rigging, steel wire
loublo on the ratlines; and whipped wire on the lower stays and heavier cordage. Belaying pins of stoel, and woll driven homo. Length of taprail over all, 6 foot I in.; breadth of boams, 38 in; depth of hold, 14in. LATEST COMMERCIAL
INTELLIGENCE. Thursday, September 15h, 1881.
One o'clock P.M.
The property mania appears to havo again affected the stock of the Hong. Kong Hotel Company, Limito. On the strength of a rumour to the effect that more than ono bona fide offer of a substantial charactor had been made
for the Hotel property, the shares have again risen in public estimation, and are in fairly good demand at advanced rates. Wo cannot say that a great deal of actual business has boon tran- actod, although there are numerous inquiries and the stock is pretty firm. Buyers would doal at $111 por share, but holders refuse to soll at that rate, and we believe some small lots have actually changed hands at 112 and 113. The present quotation may be fairly stated as $112 per share, and no doubt business will be done. during the day at that rato. Wo would again advise the Directors, if they have received a legitimate and satisfactory offer for the property, to close with it without delay. The property swindle already shows signs of coining to grief, and then we may look out for squalls, Banks are steady at 110 por cont. pre- mian, and a few small cash sales at that figure were booked yostonlay
afternoon. Some business was also done
